Zoom Call  5.28.24 Wanda Kubat-Nerdins Do You Know Your Garden?

This week's Zoom call was presented by Wanda Kubat-Nerdin and was a did you know experience and was a tutorial on what those plants in the garden should be called.

Wanda and her husband, Michael are raised-bed gardeners but while the name may imply hobby, for them it is far more and as it is so extensive, it almost sou like a typical Mid-West combine enterprise.

Do You Know What You Are growing?

Warned in advance, Wanda let all know there would be a quiz and prizes would be awarded.

Her presentation started out with a statement on how the gardens need to be prepared prior to the planting and growing season to ensure all is in working order from the beds to the watering system and also the surrounding fences.

Natural fertilizers are introduced at the same time the beds are turned. Weeding is a continual process so as to keep the nutrients for the plantings.

It's not a tuber!

A tuber is a root vegetable, where the product is below ground such as carrots, beets, even potatoes, they tend to be more starch products.

Her presentation offered little tidbits on getting a better yield from a garden as well as the chuckles that hid the answers to the quiz questions.

Want sweeter tomatoes adding baking soda, an alkaline product can offset the natural acidity of a tomato and make it more palatable and tastier. They also need more consistent water for best results.

As the tomatoes were walking along, the dad turned to the straggling child and yelled, 'ketch-up!

She offered that the best guide for planting is the original Farmer's almanac.

She also gave up details on what are misconceptions on fruits or vegetables. Example, lemons are actually thick-skinned berries.

Watermelons are not part of the fruit family but a vegetable, just like squash, cucumbers and pumpkins.

Fences for gardens, especially in more rural areas are important to keep out wildlife. Deer can jump as high as 8 feet.

For pet owners keep the family pets away from the flower gardens as they can be toxic for the animals.

What is Lacanophobia?  The fear of vegetables, which is common for young children but is easily cured by the firm voice of a parent.

Butterflies prefer weeds to vegetable flowers.

A bottle of Chanel's finest contains over 1,000 jasmine flowers as well as over a dozen roses.

Honeybees will leave their hive when it just gets too small.  Evens God's creatures need to upsize on occasion.

The term 'honeymoon' came from newlyweds consuming honey for fertility after the wedding.

It was again an informative and entertaining call and gave insight to the work needed to make a garden produce a good harvest.

Hi Ed,
Wanda's presentations always have a good mix of information and humor. Gardening is much like nurturing a business, isn't it?
