Ask An Ambassador: Persistence Is Key

By
Real Estate Agent with Transaction Alliance 513.520.5305 www.LizTour.com SAL.2002007747

It's peak lavender bloom season in our front flower bed and the pollinators are enjoying the feast!  Our honeybees and bumblebees and other native bees are flitting from one blossom to another.

I enjoy TRYING to take pictures of them with my cell phone.  I say TRYING because with lavender blooms there's not much of a snack in any individual bloom, so the bees sample and move, sample and move.  I have to decide whether to try with several different bees, or stick to one individual bee.  In general I've found that sticking with one bee gives me a better chance of getting a good focused shot that I can then crop for the increased detail.  It may take a handful of attempts to get one satisfactory shot.

There's a lot of similarity with blogging for business.

Do you have a targeted area to work? (our flower bed)

Within that targeted area, who is your audience?  (honeybees, bumbles, others)

Can you capture their attention with one attempt, or many?  (one click, two click, three...ten?)

The nice thing about blogging is if you work out the first two items, persistence can get you the rest as long as you're willing to put in the work.

Write enough blog posts to your target audience to get found.

Make sure your blogging tools are adequate to do the job (hosting site stability, load time).

Make sure your content is as appealing as lavender blooms are to bees and you can attract your clients.  And just like our lavenders, the posts can work for you year after year to attract the right audience.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

This is really true on so many parts of real estate. I had agents who would farm for 5 months and quit because it didn't work. If they would have given it a bit longer I bet they would have had a deal or two...it is a shame.

Years back we used to snail mail campaign expireds.  Not the typical approach, we waited a bit, let the ones that would immediately go back on the market go back, then farm the "leftovers".  We had a postcard campaign, then a conversion to our monthly newsletter.  We kept on until we either got returned mail, saw a change of ownership in county records, or got a call/email to stop.  It didn't give us a huge number of new listings, but adequate to continue for years. Eventually with postage increases (even using bulk mail wasn't enough of a cost reduction) and the time demands, we stopped.  But if we'd stopped after a short amount of time, we would have also thought "it doesn't work".  It did, it just took patience.

Fantastic photo and analogy! So true, persistence is so important - so is a good plan, i.e., focusing on just the one bee.

The bees don't stay on one particular bloom for long, so chasing several is futile.  Lock in on one bee on one flower and watch as it goes from small bloom to small bloom and the opportunity is there.

Sometimes the photo comes with the post, and other times the photo gives me the post.  This time, taking the photo gave me the post :)

Getting a buyer's (Bees) attention is not done with just the first effort, but a sequence of steps with a similar subject that captures their eye.

If the photo is a result of your patience, then well done.

It's mine, about 8 shots to get the one I wanted.  They've got a knack for moving just as I want to click!

Part of targeting is making sure your targets know your market area and how to contact you. One of my frustrations with some AR bloggers is that I have to really search to find their market area and how to reach them.

Carol, that's a head scratcher for me too.  I want it obvious where we work (thus the map in our blog signature), and while sometimes people get confused where in Ohio we are, at least they remember we're in OHIO :)

Bill I love that shot and now I see it takes a great deal of patience and trys to get 'the perfect shot'. Well worth it!  It is a lot like prospecting in real estate.  I recall years ago a CRS instructor gave me excellent advice.  I had been doing just sold, just listed postcard mailings out for years and was so bored with the whole thing. I asked him how I could shake things up.  He said - are your mailings bringing in clients and maintaining your SOI?  Well yes, I said, it does great and I get a lot of good feedback and questions.  Then he asks me - now why on earth would you want to mess up what's working?  Me......good point!  The mailings continued!

Not broken, good ROI/SOI results, keep on trucking!  No doubt, the same old same old can get boring for us as agents, but if it works, it works!

hi Bill- I love your analogy and what a fantastic shot. I've been trying to take some photos of the flowers at Kickerillo but those bees don't let me get too close.

Your analogy reminds me of how you targeted patio homes and did very well!

The nice thing about the bees working our lavender is they don't seem to care about us being nearby.  I can get pretty close with my phone to snap shots and they just keep going about their bee business since they're not in defense mode.

I am a very persistent person, but I have learned that not everyone appreciates persistence, there is a fine line between good and bad, apparently, haha.

Great post Bill. I love the analogy between the bees and Real Estate. It's an excellent example of how persistence can pay off not only with our blogs but also networking, calling clients, etc. Have a wonderful Wednesday!
