Wordless Wednesday…Look Who Showed Up!

Last week I wrote about the Interloper in one of our bluebird boxes.

**I shared a picture of the box but accidentally shared one with 4 bluebird eggs. It has 5 bluebird eggs and one brown-headed cowbird egg.**

Larry and I checked the box on Tuesday and look who showed up!  The brown-headed cowbird egg had just hatched!

Now, if what we’ve read is correct (and only Mother Nature knows for certain) the bluebird eggs should begin hatching in 2 to 4 days.

*Full disclosure…we cannot say for certain that the interloper is a brown-headed cowbird. We’re basing this on what we’ve read.

We’ll check in the following days to see how the bluebirds start to hatch.

Hi Wayne Martin this should be the last brood for this box until next spring. We may have two more coming up in two other boxes.

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 I've always loved observing wildlife. In Boynton Beach, I got pecked hard by a red-wing blackbird when he thought I got too close to the nest.

That's not unusual, they often lay eggs in the nests of other birds and let the adoptive parents keep the egg warm and feed the hatchling.

Awesome photo Kathy Streib   So glad you get to enjoy and that you are sharing photos.  We have some birds with eggs in their nest...and somehow they have managed to dodge the wind and rain and stayed in the tree.  Haven't figured out yet what the bird is...but it is loyal to its eggs.
