As the summer sun warms the city streets, there’s no better way to celebrate the season than by joining the annual Cambridge River Festival. This year, on June 15th, the banks of the Charles River will transform into a bustling hub of creativity and community spirit, and you’re invited!

The festival, which runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., is a free event that promises a day filled with six stages of live performances, including music, theater, dance, and poetry. It’s a perfect outing for families, art enthusiasts, and anyone looking to soak up the local culture.

Let’s start with the Mermaid Promenade. Imagine a parade with marching bands, dragon dancers, and giant puppets winding its way through the festival grounds. It’s a sight to behold and a magical start to the festivities. If you’re feeling adventurous, come in costume and join the parade at Winthrop Park by 11:15 a.m.

Music lovers, rejoice! The festival features a Jazz Stage hosted by the Cambridge Jazz Foundation, where you can groove to the rhythms of the Yaure Muniz Afrocuban Ensemble or the soulful sounds of the Don Braden Quartet. If folk and roots music is more your style, Club Passim’s stage will not disappoint, with a lineup that includes Gabriella Simpkins and Dinty Child.

For those who appreciate the spoken word, the Poetry Stage will showcase a diverse range of voices, from past winners of the Cambridge Sidewalk Poetry Contest to poets sharing their latest works in translation.

Dance enthusiasts can head over to the Theater/Dance Stage presented by Central Square Theater and The Dance Complex. Here, you’ll witness everything from soulful dance performances to interactive dance circles that invite you to join in.

And let’s not forget the Western Front Stage, where you can catch acts like Pura Vida and The Hip Hop Transformation, bringing energy and excitement to the festival atmosphere.

As you wander through the festival, you’ll encounter interactive art-making stations, a bustling arts and crafts market, and an array of international foods to satisfy your cravings. It’s a feast for the senses and an opportunity to support local artisans and businesses.

The Cambridge River Festival is more than just an event; it’s a celebration of the arts and a testament to the vibrant community that thrives in Cambridge. It’s a chance to connect with friends, make new ones, and immerse yourself in the joy of artistic expression.
