We're hearing a lot of stories about the building of ADUs on properties with already existing homes.
A few weeks ago, a pair of individuals unexpectedly built an ADU in my own backyard. They chose a prime location under the roof of my patio. They weren't shy about it either. While I watched intently from my patio door, or while resting on my patio, they paid me no mind. They simply continued to build, twig by twig and stick by stick.
Here's a photo of one of those occupants - a Mourning Dove. I'm amazed at how close I've been to their ADU, without their seeming alarmed.
I have learned if I leave the nest in place, they are likely to have as many as 3 broods in a year. Sounds good to me!
Nina Hollander, Broker - These squatters won't require an eviction notice.
George Souto - Yes, the nerve of them!
Hannah Williams - It's hard to not love 'em. Other than I'm really cautious about using the patio curtains. I don't want to disturb them.
Endre Barath, Jr. - Those are my thoughts too.

Michael Jacobs - It could be so much worse. I still remember the skunk who squatted in my crawl space.
Kat Palmiotti - I am enjoying their time here!
Myrl- That is the best title!!!! I couldn't imagine what the story was going to be!!! Love it! I hope the dove returns!!!!! Yea!

Myrl Jeffcoat - I fell for it! Before I got to the last line in paragrpah two, I thought I was about to have a heart attack! And then I took a deep breath. Sigh..... What a relief to know that mama Dove took refuge in the safest, smartest, and most perfect location for new life to be born!
I can't wait to find out how this story ends. Or will it keep going? I love this post! It sould be FEATURED!

Thanks for the feature in your weekly "Posts Just For You," Kathy.
Good morning Meryl. Came close to the same situation with the home we recently closed. Someone attempted to squat over my front door. Luckily for me the ledge was too thin and the nest fell before completion forcing the bird to look for a new location. If it stayed in place and had eggs I would have been using my garage entrance for the summer. Enjoy your day.

I am not sure how I missed your post, but I am sure you don't mind those squatters at all, haha.

Great photo and story. We are blessed with returning nesters every season too: Mourning doves, Hummigbirds and Sparrows. Our trees and hanging plants become condos at the end of Winter and all of Spring.

Myrl Jeffcoat they must have recognized the special nature of the roost and feel they will be appreciated.

I saw this pic on Facebook. My two cats do a good job of keeping the birds at bay from the patio, if only by staring through the glass windows. The yard, however, is fair game. Great pic, as always!

Very clever post Myrl! I was wondering at first where you were going with this and then I knew as we have our very own squatters on our front porch. We noticed yesterday that the babies have left the nest and hopefully they're enjoying the back yard now where there is plenty of food, water and shelter. So fun to watch all the birds!

A lean to or pop up tents ? This is a first for me . Reports are starting to co e back that Beach Communities are at risk .
Hi Myrl:
What a cute post! We have had doves nesting at several homes (seems like it's always near the front door), along with hummers and orioles.
Jeff
Sweet! The best squatter story to date! Nice capture too!
Way better than the porcupine we had to evict from under our deck!
Good morning Myrl Jeffcoat ,
I'm so glad that Kathy Streib featured your post! This is the best squatter story I've ever read! Love the photo! I've been out of town so this was a priceless post to read upon my return!
They are insisting that you throw no wild parties during their stay ! ………………….
Myrl Jeffcoat - How are the squatters? Are they still hanging around? Did they fly the coup? Curious minds want to know.
I hope you had a great Fourth of July!
Awwww....they must really like your place. We had some high winds this spring, and some bird eggs were blown out of a nest in one of my trees. So I did not have any baby birds this year.
Myrl, I was a little concerned when I started to read the first few words of your post since human squatters can cause many problems, but these feathered squatters are very welcomed in my book! I have yet to find the nesting places of the many morning doves that frequent my backyard. Robins like the nooks under our eaves and return every spring.
