Flower Mound, TX Has An Interesting History

When you think of Flower Mound, and you love flowers, think of me. Flower Mound is my home. Like many people who searched for a place on earth for a destination to call home, I came to Flower Mound for the same reasons others before me settled in this Town. I am attracted to the name of the Town and to the prairies and wildflowers.

It was on the bench of my Feature Photo taken on June 13, 2024, where the Prairie Grasses grow where I meditated and pondered. Under the two trees that split and continued to grow, next to each other but in different directions, I thought about the couple who donated their land. Green Acres Memorial Park is now written in the Town of Flower Mound's history books and Denton County records. Their names are Agnes and Larry Davis. They are deceased, but their legacy lives on. I hope you enjoy all my photographs and the story I'm about to unfold about the gift residents received from Larry Davis who upon his death in 2005, donated 13 acres to the Town of Flower Mound. Larry's wife Agnes left this world in 1994.

Gratitude is the fairest blossom which springs from the soul.
---Henry Ward Beecher

I remember sitting on the bench of the Directors for Keep Flower Mound Beautiful for the Town Council in 2005 when I learned about Larry's passing and his benevolent donation to the Town of Flower Mound. It was decided that the land would be dedicated to creating a Memorial Park to honor Larry and his wife. It has taken many years and thousands of hours of volunteers, like Becky Bertoni, Nancy McClendon, and Jean Mason to keep up with the gardening and maintenance for Green Acres. Volunteers are the salt of the earth. They are the heroes of the community that give back without compensation. Their rewards are seeing the results of their hard work dedicated to improve the quality of life for all creatures on earth.

I wondered how Green Acres was doing after the dark clouds descended on Flower Mound throughout the months of March, April, and May. It was a very unusual rainy season, an anomaly, not something the people of Flower Mound are used to experiencing. We had lots of thunderstorms, lightening, hail, wind gusts from 70 to 80+ mph, hail and very little sun. But now the sun shines. Spring wildflowers that normally bloom in abundance in spring are emerging. They are scarce, compared to previous years; however, many are showing up now during this month of June. The volunteers will be working hard. I commend them all for how much of their time they are giving back to the Town of Flower Mound.

Becky Bertoni and Nancy McClendon, the volunteers from Green Acres. They are now friends of mine from our monthly Book Club, Wise Women With Words. Until about a year ago, I did not know Becky or Nancy. However, I visited Green Acres Memorial Park often over the years, and wondered, who was responsible for maintaining the native plants at Green Acres Memorial Park? After getting to know Becky and Nancy from our monthly book club meetings, I can honesty say, what they have accomplished are selfless and kindess acts of giving back to the Community. Because of volunteers like them, Flower Mound is more beautiful.

Heartfelt thanks to Carina Vanlaet who invited me to the Flower Mound Book Club more than a year ago. Carina has always been helpful to everyone she meets whether it is in Flower Mound, or neighboring communities. We have known each other for several years. She wears her heart on her sleeves. It has been a blessing to know these wonderfully wise women and many others from the Town of Flower Mound, especially from the book club. Each one is like a unique blossom that blooms before my very eyes. I look forward to each time we meet to discuss the many books we select to read.

As the summer heat begins to settle down in the Town of Flower Mound this month of June, I am thrilled to see and photograph the wildflowers of my hometown, where I had my humble beginnings in Texas back in March of 1997. The Davis Family made Flower Mound home in 1969 moving from Dallas. Originally, Agnes was from New Jersey. The couple bought Frank Mason's Tennessee Walking Horse farm, which was on the Green Acres Farm decades ago.

Something I noticed over the years of my life's existence is that expanding technology has demanded more of our attention than peace and meditation in the land where pretty wildflowers blanket the earth. Are minds being destroyed? I wonder... Today, we rely on the strength of volunteers to protect and save the gifts we have been bestowed upon with since the beginning of time, or at least since Prairie Days when pioneers traversed to greener pastures, like Flower Mound.

Touch the earth. See and believe you can make the world a better place. I wondered if that was on the minds of Larry and Agnes when they drew up their Last Will and Testament years before they passed on. Under these circumstances of getting their affairs in order is the reason why residents now enjoy the grounds of Green Acres Memorial Park in Flower Mound, Texas. Flowers, like people serve many purposes. Both come to an end in their life cycle. Larry and Agnes ensured that their land would be protected from destruction of Development. They had to have known the value flowers serve to procreate species, that serve as food to many valuable butterflies and insects. I saw many at Green Acres yesterday!

Thank goodness my new Sony Optical Steady Shot camera allows me to focus. Without it, I would not have seen the butterfly through the vegetation. Many thanks to the Town of Flower Mound to see the vision and follow through the dream of Larry and Agnes Davis. Green Acres Farm is free to everyone to roam the grounds. Plant lovers and photographers alike will enjoy identifying plants, trees, wildflowers, and native grasses hopefully, for generations to come.

Since I was a child, I knew the habitat of a plant is the environment in which it either prefers or demands to live. If you are considering living in Flower Mound, I hope you'll consider giving me a call.

Michael Jacobs - Whenever I have conversations with people in Flower Mound, I ask if they would move to another city. Unless it is for relocation reasons due to a promotion and more money, they would not leave Flower Mound.

Thank you for your wonderful comment!

I really like your story about this couple and the forethought they gave to preserving their land for all to enjoy. How grateful the town must be to enjoy such a wonderful place. Great photos as well, thank you for sharing.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 - It was very big of them to do this for the Community. Obviously, they loved Flower Mound and even though they knew they would one day have to leave unwillingly, they made provisions in the Will that stipulated it needed not to be divided for Developers but to be used for the community to enjoy.

I really enjoyed taking photographs and sitting on that bench enjoying the sound of Nature's silence that was music in my ears.
