Father's Day 2024  Hope all Enjoy the Day

 

I read a post by Kathy Streib  yesterday honoring fathers ahead of this day. One of them made me pause.

My father didn’t tell me how to live. He lived and let me watch him do it.   Clarence Budington Kelland

That Kelland quote resonates so much with me, as my father never was one to give a detail of what or why he was doing something. It was a matter of watching and seeing the results and hoping if it fell onto my lap down the road, that visual was there to guide me.

 

My father's education was limited to a couple years of high school and the learning while in the navy during World War II and on the jobs, he worked until retirement.

He would never pass a challenge, nor would he call in someone to do a job that he felt he could do and didn't want to spend the money.

To put in perspective, this same man had a $7,000 mortgage on the house he bought in 1949 and practically didn't sleep for 2 weeks worrying about how he was going to pay it off.

Well, I did learn from him and do try to do some things, but still stay away from plumbing and electrical.

Dad passed in 2022, but he is still there whenever I look at a challenge and carry the thought, 'How would Dad approach this.

For anyone that takes the time to read this, enjoy the day and wish all that you find the best of the day.

Thanks for sharing some of your special memories.

I think about my father every day...he passed away in 1965.

Are you watching the US Open? Dolores has it on...she has played on the course in tournaments in long past years.

Roy Kelley   Thank you for stopping. Yes, I have played at that layout and a couple of others on that same complex.  Donald Ross was a special designer and I seek out his designs when I have the opportunity.

Ed, Nice to hear about your father as a role model for you.  I hear a lot of my father in your memories of your father.  My dad passed in 2000, would be 106 this year. Take care.

Ed my Dad passed away 20 years ago, but it sounds like your Dad and mine had a lot in common.  Mine only had 4 years of education, and taught me much like yours taught you.

Hi Ed- what a sweet post about your father.  I think many of the fathers in our era were doers and not talkers. We learned by observing!  I'm sure he was proud of how you turned out!!! Thank you for the mention.

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 - Reading your father's story sounded like you were writing a story about my dad who also taught by watching him at work, plus mine joined the Navy too. They really were the greatest generation and as children we were the lucky ones!

I really enjoyed reading your blog post.

So sorry for your loss Ed.  Your dad sounds like a great man and a wonderful father.  Setting the example is the best way, I think, for a child to see what works and why.
