Timing Is Everything

Timing is a combination of Luck and Skill.

That being said, skill is gained by practice, practice, practice. The best example I can think of is this miraculous catch by Odell Becham of the NY Giants. Becham most likely practiced catching footballs day in and day out year after year BUT can you imagine catching one running full speed ahead, being bumped by a competitor, jumping into the air spinning backwards and catching the ball behind your head with one hand!!! I've linked to the video as the NFL won't allow us to embed the video. Just click on the picture below.

If you are jealous of other agents because of their "LUCK" maybe you are not seeing the whole picture.

One skill I carried over to Real Estate from a previous occupation is a "tickler file". Mine was an actual 3 X 5 card file system set up by Day, Month, and Year.

An example of how it worked was if I introduced myself to someone as a Realtor and they showed any interest I'd ask "are you thinking of buying or selling a home" and they said "yes but probably not until next year" then I'd write down as much info as I could remember (after leaving them) on a 3 X 5 card and file it 6 months down the road. Every time I came in contact with that person I'd write down any info including small talk that might build the relationship.

Their card always moved down the line even if they purchased from another agent. In that case it would move 3 years down the line. This method lead to great success for me.

Indeed Doug Dawes and those that have make it look effortless when you watch them... thus people think what they do must be easy.

I have kept a few "trophies" Endre Barath, Jr. but for the most part mine have also ended up in the trash. Yesterdays trophies are not going to pay today's bill and they most likely are not going to empress anyone other than that fellow that ended in 2nd place.

No such thing as "luck" in business, Bob. We each "make" our own luck.

Well said Nina Hollander, Broker (my Love) and the opposite is true as well, we are responsible for our own failures as well.

Excellent tickler file system - and wow, what a catch!

That tickler file system made me number two in the Nation when I worked for United Church Directories, a company that made family pictorial directories for churches nationwide. I'd still be with them today if Lifetouch would not have purchased them and trashed the company.

Every time I watch that video I am in awe. Here is a young man who most likely was a track star and later taught to catch a ball while running as fast as he can and at the same time his competitor is out to level him. Geeze!

I can relate to that toon, Bob.  It's almost like a ritual.  Eat dinner, watch a little TV, fall asleep on the couch, wake up, find it's 10:00 pm and time to go to bed.
