Most DIYers attempt to save some money and haul their own unwanted items to the landfill. Securing your load in a pickup truck is critical and a bungee cord isn't the solution. 

 

Properly securing items prevents them from shifting or falling out while driving. Next time you are driving down any road take a minute and notice all the trash and debris along the side of the road. These are all items that fell out of or off other vehicles. Larger debris can cause accidents or create hazards for other drivers on the road. Even worse are the items  that are not properly secured. They can become projectiles during sudden stops or turns, potentially causing damage to vehicles or injury to pedestrians.

Securing your load is also a matter of legal compliance. Most municipalities have regulations requiring loads to be properly secured to prevent accidents. Failure to do so can  lead to traffic tickets or fines.

Overloading your pickup truck can be just as dangerous.  Pickup trucks are designed to carry a specific weight. Exceeding the limits of a vehicle can  endanger both the driver and others on the road. Overloading affects the vehicle's handling and braking capabilities. Load weight and instability increases the risk of accidents.

Basically, taking a few extra minutes to properly load and stabilize your junk in a pickup truck can ensure a safe trip and arrival.
