Motivational Monday…Hello!

Last week I was in a building trying to find the office I needed. A  kind couple stopped to see if they could help.

(I must have a telling look that says “I have no idea where I’m going” because this is not the first time this has happened!)

At any rate, the gentleman asked if I was Chinese, Vietnamese, or Japanese. When I said Chinese, he said “Ni hao ma” (hello in Mandarin)

I replied and hoped he wouldn’t start speaking to me in Chinese.  My fluency in the language is limited to “hello’... “thank you” and “I don’t speak Chinese”,

He is a former Marine and has learned to say “hello” in 20+ languages.  He went on to say the most interesting thing.

“Even though you may not speak a lot of languages, you can always learn to say “Hello” in several. That way you can engage others and who knows…you might learn something or meet a new friend.”

I don’t know if that’s true but his smile and “hello” made my day!

So…how many languages can you say “hello” in?

You never know what kind of impact you can have on someone by just saying hello.

The simple thanks that make people smile. I can say Hello in 3 in addition to English. Can't spell them but Portuguese, Spanish and Arabic (Lebanese)

Ed said it all.  That was so nice of them.  You are obviously very approachable, which I have learned from your previous posts.  People are good.

Michael Elliott I do believe in the good in people. Sometimes it's hidden or buried but for 99% of the people, there's good in them.

That is really cool and it would be easy enough to learn a basic greeting in different languages in order to be respectful to those who speak a language different from us.

I agree Brian England how easy it is to learn Hello in many languages.

Good morning, Kathy... I can say hello in at least seven or eight languages. Your post reminded me how sad I am that I've lost all my Mandarin fluency. Back in 1970, I had the fluency of a high school graduate in Taiwan... reading, writing, speaking.

Nina Hollander, Broker I knew you'd be able to say "hello" in many languages. I spoke relatively fluent German and could read and write it as well but lost much of it. My mini-me is taking Mandarin in summer camp.

Kathy Streib hi Kathy... that's how I learned Mandarin. I had a fellowship at George Washington University for 12 weeks of intensive study--- 5 days a week, 8 hours a day.

Michael Jacobs good quote. being kind is like a cycle. We become kind when kindness is shown to us which makes us want to be more kind to others.

Because our daughter and son-in-law are currently living in Germany, Rick and I have been learning German using Duolingo. Several years now, practicing every day...doing ok. But I've been to Germany three times and each time when someone has spoken to me in German I have completely gone blank. I panic. LOL

I can read it much better than I can understand it spoken to me. It is exciting when I catch the basis of what is being said though.

Sharon Tara I took German in high school and college. I could read and write it as well however when you don't use it, you lose it.

Good morning Kathy,

You made a new friend because you were approachable. Saying Hello is something I do every morning (and sometimes I say Good morning) as I walk my 2 miles and see so many different cultures walking. It's always fun to see the faces light up and now many wave before I walk by them.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX don't you love telling people Hello or Good Morning when you're walking. I've found that some people are walking around looking at the ground or with a frown on but when you say Good morning or Hello to you, they perk up.

Thanks for the feel good post, Kathy! Learned how to say Konnichiwa many years ago when Spensyr was in high school and he befriended a Japanese exchange student. I know how to say hello is 3 languages, other than Catonese to the kitties!

A client once wouldn't answer me when I would say "hello" to her. She said her religion wouldn't allow it because of the bad word it starts out before the "O". If I said hi, she would say it back!

Hi Kathy:

I really liked the comment that he shared with you. Such a simply thing to be able to greet someone in their language, and with a smile, and bring a smile to their face.

I think I can say hello in 7 other languages. Thank you would seem to be another short phrase to know in other languages.

Jeff

Jeff Dowler, CRS I agree. How simple is that...to take the time to learn to say hello in different languages, and yes, I agree.. how about learning to say Thank You in different languages as well. I've often felt it was arrogant of us (in America) not to take the time to learn another language.

We have always made it a point to learn some of the language for where we have travelled (e.g., Italy, France, Brazil) we could at least communicate on a basic level. I think it is appreciated by those we are trying to communicate with.

HI again Kathy Streib   Love the story.  I am part Pueblo Indian and this time of year definitely look Hispanic.  Amazing how many times I have been engaged by someone wanting to speak Spanish.  I know about 20 words or so.  It can be comical at times!

Kathy I can so relate to this post!  I learned from my Dad at a very early age to engage others, even if it's a simple hello in their language or just a big smile and Good Morning etc!  Honestly it used to drive us kids nuts some times as My Dad struck up conversations with anybody, anywhere!!  He traveled extensively so along with that so did we and had the chance to meet people from all over the world.  Pretty cool place to be comfortable meeting and greeting folks.......still is to this day.  Right!!!

What a great idea to learn a simple welcoming phase in another language! We often forget how a kind word can brighten someone's day, as this gentleman obviously did!
