ActiveRain encourages participation and the building of relationships between members. The point system is the carrot at the end of the stick to encourage participation, but there are limits.
As has been explained in other posts, there is a maximum number of points granted for various activities based on daily or weekly limits.
There are other limits that most members are aware of.
You need a MINIMUM of 50 words to get points for a post, and words embedded in an infographic don't count toward that number.
You need a minimum of 50 characters to get points for a comment.
The number of posts per member is limited to 10 per day, so no one gets to dominate the blog roll.
Some limits you might not be aware of until you meet them firsthand:
There is a total limit for characters in a post, but it's not the characters displayed, but the sum total of all the html coding that supports the post. And while the number is QUITE large, it does occasionally come into play, in particular when the html coding is not streamlined. E.g. if using a table in your post, and each cell of a table has the full formatting instructions rather than formatting the entire table, you may find yourself getting a "your post is too large" limit warning when you try to publish. And obviously if you're not familiar with html coding, it may be a baffling message to receive!
Haven't been seeing much spam for the last few years? That's because there are limits in place.
New profiles go into quarantine until vetted by ARMS, so no more overnight publishing blitzes by spammers promoting topics that have nothing to do with real estate. ARMS monitors the blog roll throughout the day for any profiles that go from normal to "spammer" and reacts accordingly.
There is also a limit on the number of comments per time period. It's a high number that most members would never experience, and doesn't occur until long, long after members have passed the daily limit of comments for points.
Comment limits only apply to standalone comments, use the threaded comment approach and you save your comment counts.
Maximum standalone comment limits before the system stops you from leaving further standalone comments:
50 comments in an hour
200 comments in a day
500 comments in a week
There is nothing being done to discourage participation or to keep you from getting your points (if points are something you care about).
Carry on.
