Wet Spot on Ceiling? Your Emergency Plan to Minimize Water Damage

By

If you didn’t realize, water damage can happen within minutes.

Within an hour -

  • Your drywall starts bulging.
  • Your furniture starts swelling and cracking.

Within a few hours,

  • Your window and doorwood start to warp.
  • Metal may start to rust.
  • If you live in an older property with hazardous substances like lead and asbestos, you may be exposed to them.

Don’t delay, don’t ignore. Call a water damage restoration expert immediately.

Here are a few things you can do to minimize the damage until they arrive

Create Drainage Points to Prevent Leaks From Spreading

Locate water spots, leaks, or bulges and poke them with a sharp thing like a screwdriver, pencil, or pen to create a hole.

Accumulated water will start draining from the hole immediately, preventing the leaks from spreading and causing major issues such as cave-ins.

Apply gentle pressure to create a small hole. A larger hole will be difficult to manage.

Be Ready to Collect the Water

Place a bucket or tub below the leaks to collect the water. If the tub is shallow, place towels or rags beneath it to catch the splashes and overflows.

Cover the furniture and electronics near the leaky areas with plastic sheets to protect them from water damage. Unplug the electrical appliances.

Improve Ventilation

Once the rain has stopped, open the windows and doors to let the moist air escape. Switch on all the fans and dehumidifiers to improve air circulation so the wet spots do not spread further.

If you have portable floor fans, direct them toward the wet spots on the ceiling and walls to speed up the drying process.

Use Temporary Patches

Keep a roll of roofing tape handy at home for weather emergencies.

  • Identify the leaks that need to be taped.
  • Remove loose debris, dirt, and chipping paint around them.
  • Dry the area using clean clothes or tissues.
  • Apply a piece of tape to the leaks and press it firmly.
  • Smooth out to remove any trapped air bubbles.
  • If needed, apply multiple layers of tape to contain the leak thoroughly.

If you have a water-resistant sealant, caulk, or roofing sealant, you can use them instead.

Ensure Proper Drainage

Now that you have handled the leaks, it's time to clear the water buildup on the roof to prevent further leaks and damage.

Here is what you need to do:

Clear the Gutters and Downspouts

Scoop out the debris using a towel or gutter scoop. Use a plumber’s snake to clear internal blockages. Finally, use a hose to flush out any remaining debris.

Can’t access the roof?

Just scoop out the debris from the downspout outlet. We will reach you as soon as possible and do the rest.

Clear the Water Pools

Warning - Make sure your roof is safe for climbing. Do not attempt the below if it has started caving in, has too many leaks and cracks, or feels slippery. Wait for us to arrive.

If you notice water pools around the vents, skylights, chimneys, or other low-point areas, use a broom to push the water toward the gutter or edges of the roof where it can drain.

Remove damaged branches, dried leaves, and other debris from the roof to clear blockages.

Common Reasons Why Your Roof Starts Leaking After Rain

Missing or Damaged Shingles

The shingles may break or get blown away during heavy rain and wind, leaving gaps where water can penetrate your home.

Damaged Flashings

Flashing can deteriorate with time. That's why it is important to have them inspected routinely to ensure they continue to provide adequate protection against bad weather.

Clogged Gutters and Downspouts

Debris like twigs, dried leaves, and dirt can accumulate in the gutters and downspouts with time. They can clog the pipes, causing water to back up on the roof. Standing water can weaken the roof, causing leaks and cracks.

Routine gutter cleaning and roof maintenance can help avoid such issues.

Work with a Company That Can Handle All Insurance Claims

If you suspect that the water damage is extensive and might be covered by your insurance.

“Work with a reputable company that will assist you with the damage to your home and guide you through the insurance claim process from start to finish” suggested Mr. Pence from Pence Bros.

A great company will carefully inspect the damage and work with your insurance adjuster to ensure you receive the best possible outcome. And we restore your home to its full glory.

Hi Dave- we actually had this happen once. Thank goodness my husband is a retired builder. He poked a small hole in the ceiling to prevent the whole ceiling from coming down.

I have seen plenty of people just paint over water damage, but that will not solve the issue, haha.  I agree with Endre Barath, Jr. and hope that you will get active in the Rain, it seems that you have good information to share!

I lived in an apartment and the water from above began coming through the ceiling in the bathroom, it happened whilst I was away of course so it created a bulge and eventually broker though into the bath. Luckily it was not too bad, but it took a little while to get it repaired.
