Milkweed Plant is $6.49. The Caterpillar is FREE

By
Real Estate Agent with eXp Realty of California, Inc. CA DRE #01490977

Our Monarch Caterpillar Nursery on our back patio continues to prosper.

We had another chrysalis hatch today and enjoyed seeing yet another butterfly - that makes 5 so far that we have seen.

And we counted 11 caterpillars of various sizes on the milkweed plants yesterday. They are hungry and leaves are disappearing rapidly.

I went to Armstrong Garden Center to buy a couple more plants  - the caterpillars are eating leaves faster than the plants we have can sprout new ones.

I went to pay for the 2 plants and the cashier pointed out that I had a stowaway (I missed it), and a good sized one (about 1.5") that will be ready for the next stage soon.

What a surprise bonus!

Jeff- how exciting and to think you got a stowaway to boot!!  I may have to Google and see if it's too late (or hot) to get a milkweed plant here.

The Garden Center was running low on plants since so many have been buying them Kathy Streib

I'm not sure what the seasonal issues are for milkweed, or Monarch butterflies.

Jeff, OH MY, they will eat your plant.    I had some on my geraniums when I got home, and much of the leaves were eaten.

The Monarch Caterpillars are voracious eaters Joan Cox  at least from what we have experienced!

HI Jeff Dowler, CRS That is really cool.  We have a lot of milkweed in Nebraska that grows wild.  We will Monacrhs migrate through the area every year.  What a beutuful process to create those creatures! Glad you have a new stowaway!

I imagine it grows wild here, too Mike McCann Nebraska Land Broker but I've not seen it. Would love to see the Monarch Butterfly population grow instead of shrink!

You are right - watching is the key Michael Jacobs. Who knows what you will miss if you aren't paying attention. Wonder if I would have eventually seen the stowaway if the cashier hadn't pointed it out?!

Hi Nina Hollander, Broker

Hopefully there will be photos to share. The butterfly that hatched yesterday hung around until today but finally flew off.

That is funny that you had a stowaway, haha.  Can you grow milkweed at your home, or will you have to continue to purchase the plants to keep the caterpillars coming around?

Jul 02, 2024 05:28 AM

Brian England

We buy the plants rather than growing from seed which takes too long - we really only have room for plants in pots on the back patio...and who knows, perhaps another stowaway?!

A welcome bonus in your purchase, usually stowaways are unwanted hopefully this one will become a wonderful, beautiful butterfly.

It was a neat surprise Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543  It was quite large as you can see. Maybe there have been other small ones and we just missed them. WE are looking forward to seeing more butterflies.

Good morning Jeff,

It's quite apparent your Monarch Caterpillar Nursery on your back patio continues to prosper! Thank you for keeping us updated and good for you for snagging a surprise bonus on your last milkweed purchase!

Things are going well Dorie Dillard Austin TX  Unfortunately some caterpillars seem to crawl off to unknown places to become a chrysalis and we never see them again.

Dear Jeff,

So cool!! I seeded milkweed, but have not seen any grow. We are in a drought, so maybe the leftovers of Beryl will jumpstart things at the end of the week. I see some seedlings of some sort, but not sure what is what.

Jul 08, 2024 08:28 AM

Good luck with getting some rain, but not TOO much Dorte Engel  I hope your milkweed will soon prosper.

Jeff Dowler, CRS - thank you for putting forth your efforts to save the Monarchs and caterpillars too! Wouldn't it be great if you stepped outdoors and saw Monarchs swarming all over your backyard! I think if I saw something like that I would drop to my knees and give thanks.

Some people have busy bees in their yards. You have very hungry caterpillars with a stowaway too!!! How lucky are you!!!

Jul 08, 2024 02:00 PM
Jeff Dowler, CRS

Thank you for the kind words Patricia Feager, ABR,CRS,GRI,MRP  We are enjoying doing what we can. I would love to see multiple Monarchs instead of just 1 here and there. I suspect the mortality rate for the caterpillars is pretty high.
