Wordless Wednesday…One Room/No AC…Yikes!

Larry and I were surprised last week when we checked on one of our bluebird boxes. This box has not had a bluebird nest in it since July 2022. Since then it’s had 2 wren nests.

When I last week, I was shocked to see a fully built bluebird nest in it. (There was a wren nest earlier in the season but that was all)

There are now 5 beautiful bluebird eggs in the box!  We’ll keep tabs on the box to make sure there are no “interlopers” there.

Happy as we are to see the bluebirds back in this box, we’re concerned about the heat. We’ve had temperatures hovering around 100 degrees, with feels like temps up to 107.

Temperatures in birdboxes can exceed 120 degrees and often are 10 degrees hotter than the outside temps.

We have a large umbrella over our bird box at Casa Streib and Larry has been known to place a mister nearby.  He also redesigned the box for better ventilation.

Fingers crossed for these bluebirds!!!

Nina Hollander, Broker in our snow and freeze in 2021 there were eggs in the box. Larry went out every 4 hours and placed hand-warmers under the nest.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX we're concerned about the birds in our current box at home. They're due to hatch any day now. It's so hot I don't know how they will survive.

Hi Kathy, I know you and Larry are doing all you can to comfort those new bluebirds in your backyard, as I know it's been very hot here in Texas this summer. Temps over 100 degrees are not welcomed here at all.

Heat is a danger for all wildlife, not just the birds and their eggs. One of the reasons we need to tackle climate control as soon as we can.

I love that you and Larry do all that you can to make sure the birdies are safe and sound! I'll be sure to show Gary the birdhouse complete with umbrella and misting system!  We don't have bird houses but we do make sure the water fountain is on first thing in the morning to cool off our different flocks of birds.  Once they hear it come on, in they fly............ahhh nice cool and wet!

My nesting doves who are dwelling in a corner under the roof to my patio have stayed loyal to the nest, even though temps today were 109 degrees.  I went out and turned the hose nozzle to a fine mist and tried to give them a little relief this afternoon.
