Budget-Friendly Towns for Retirees in Maryland -
#1 Havre De Grace
The WorldAtlas once again inspired me to write about 7 budget-friendly towns in Maryland for Retirees. So, here we go with the first in the series, the first town is Havre de Grace.
Havre de Grace is a town in Harford County in northern Maryland. It is situated at the mouth of the Susquehanna River and the head of the Chesapeake Bay. In the 2010 U.S. Census Havre de Grace was home to about 12,952 people. In 2014, Smithsonian magazine called Havre de Grace one of the 20 best small U.S. towns to visit.
Havre de Grace offers a good mix of attractions that ensure that retirees have something to keep them occupied throughout their senior years. Havre de Grace offers several museums exhibiting its rich heritage including a great Maritime Museum. There is a beautiful promenade for walks, restaurants, coffee houses, etc. Plus, it isn't that far from the Perryville Casino.
Havre de Grace has a rich history too. During the Revolutionary War, it was visited several times by General Lafayette, George Washington was said to have spent the night there on the journey to New York City for his first inauguration. In 1789, during the First Congress Havre de Grace missed only by one vote being named the capital of the United States.
Today, Havre de Grace has been affected by the BRAC activities of the Department of Defense. DOD recently moved activities and personnel from various bases to the Aberdeen Proving Ground, a few miles away, which has added to the demand for housing and services in the area.
