Pet Safety Tips For July 4th Celebrations And Fireworks

Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Realty 179530

Tips To Keep Your Pets Safe On July 4th From Charlotte's Pet-Friendly Realtor®, Nina Hollander

We humans might love the Red, White & Boom of  July 4th fireworks. But your pets ABSOLUTELY DO NOT LOVE FIREWORKS! Dogs and cats are frightened by fireworks, explosions and loud noises. Their first instinct is to run away to safety. Sadly, many of the dogs and cats that escape then can't seem to find their way home and are lost forever. Did you know that July 5th is the day when most pets are reported missing? That's because more pets go missing on July 4th than any other day of the year.

So keep tomorrow, July 4th, a "pet-friendly" holiday. And just in case one of your four-legged family member(s) does run away, make sure they have easy-to-spot identification on them. Follow the fireworks safety tips in the infographics from PetFinder below and you're sure to have a paw-some holiday enjoying the red, white, and boom while keeping your fur-babies stress-free.

Your fur-babies will paws-itively appreciate your taking a little bit of extra time to make sure they are safe and secure and away from as much of the red, white, and boom noise as possible. Don't let your pet become a July 4th statistic!

The American Veterinary Medical Association provides more tips to keep your pets safe this July 4th holiday that are easy to overlook. These include:

  • Too much sun and heat (and humidity!) can be dangerous to pets and we are expecting some hot and humid weather. Keep your pets inside when it’s extremely hot/humid; make sure they have access to shady spots and plenty of water when outdoors; don’t leave them outside for extended periods in hot weather. Know the 11 signs that your pet may be overheating.

  • After the celebrations, check your yard for fireworks debris before allowing your pets outside to play. Even if you didn’t set off fireworks yourself, debris can make its way into your yard, where curious animals may pick it up to play with or eat.

  • Update your dog's and cat's microchip information or have them microchipped if not already done.

  • In the event your pet disappears, be sure to have some recent photos handy.

  • Don't allow your pets near your barbecue grill while it is in use or still hot. And check out the 10 tips to keep your dog safe during a cookout below.

Keep Your Dog Safe at a Cookout

So go ahead... have a paw-some Independence Day celebration. But don't forget about your four-legged companions and to keep your pets safe during the July 4th celebrations. Don't let carelessness ruin your holiday with a lost pet.

These tips to keep your pets safe during the July 4th celebrations are provided by Nina Hollander with Coldwell Banker, Greater Charlotte pet-friendly residential real estate expert and pet parent.

This is great information for pet owners. We got some calming chews for our Sadie so she won't be so anxious during the fireworks.

June Piper-Brandon hi June... I've had dogs that would try to hide in the house. My current dog is very laid back. He might not choose to go outside, but in the house, he's just fine.

Good morning Nina. Well put. It is time to think of the welfare of our fur-babies. And, for those who don't have a per, be considerate of your neighbors that do. Finally, enjoy the 4th!

Wayne Martin thanks and good morning, Wayne. And you raise an excellent point for neighbors to be considerate of those who do have pets. Now that you've moved into a house, what's your status on adding a dog to the family?

It seems that I hear parents complaining about fireworks that disturb their pets and young children, haha.

Brian England hi Brian... fireworks terrify most pets... they wake up young children... and then it's a problem getting them back to sleep. I go to sleep relatively early as I'm up by 4am... so the fireworks bother me as well, as they usually go off an hour or two after I'm asleep.

I guess people just do not think about how loud it must be for a dog to hear all the fireworks. It is loud for me!

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty good morning, Jeff. You make a good point. Dogs' ears are very sensitive (cats', as well). The noise must be amplified for them in ways we can't imagine.

Hello, Nina. What a timely post for the safety of our beloved pets. I know my pets are definitely afraid of hearing those fireworks go off at nights. We keep them inside until most of the noise is gone away.

Jerry Newman everyone I know who has pets tries to keep them indoors and calm during fireworks. I don't understand how so many people pay no attention and lose their pets.

Hi Nina- both of our hunting dogs did not like fireworks. We kept them inside and if they had to go out, we went with them even in our fenced-in back yard.

Kathy Streib good morning, Kathy. Our Bingo is fine inside the house, but he resists going out until the noise is over. My Gracie completely freaked out even in the house and would look for places to hide.

Nina Hollander, Broker  what awesome advice, we are so about our pets and the nearby neighbors truly annoy us that are setting off fireworks as we speak after all tomorrow is the day and fireworks are illegal in Los Angeles just on a side note, Endre

Jul 03, 2024 10:39 PM
Nina Hollander, Broker

Endre Barath, Jr. good morning, Endre... I can get people setting off fireworks on the day of the holiday... but why do it in advance is something I just don't understand. So far so good in my own neighborhood. It's easy to buy fireworks just across the border in SC, so Charlotteans drive over there to legally buy them.
