My Hyper Sense of Smell Says "Toss it Out"!

When my sister was a young adult and still living at home she told Mom "I will never have left-overs in my house!". Fifty plus years later I believe she has been true to her word. I'm not sure how she does it. Either she throws away a lot of food or she has portions down to a science. I don't believe she even keeps Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner around after the initial event.

It's NOT that way in our house. I might see Thanksgiving dinner 3 or 4 more times. 😊 That being said I am very leery of summer meal left overs, especially potato salad.

The USDA has some good summer food safety tips at this link: Food Safety.

As I mentioned at the top of this post: My Hyper Sense of Smell Says "Toss it Out"! It drives my wife crazy because she never smells what I do but when I tell her there is something rotten in the fridge she goes through it and always find one or even two items confirming my sense of smell.

Do you enjoy the cartoons written by my son (Timmothy N. Timm) which I use as a springboard to write my daily posts? His strip, Titus & Philemon, has run in two newspapers for years as well as being printed in my blog every day. Titus & Philemon (pronounced Phi - Lee -Man) are guinea pigs. Their owner is Joe. Timmothy has never repeated a joke/comic strip in the 12 years he has been writing it. He has never copied another strip, such as Peanuts or Garfield. You can follow Timmothy on FB as Titus & Philemon and you can also check him out on Instagram as Instagram.com/titus and philemon/ .For Timmothy's website type timmtimmothy.com into your browser. I tried to put it in a link here but it refuses to work. Do NOT put anything in front of timmtimmothy.com or it will not work.

Sometimes leftovers taste better the second time around.

Peter den Boer I feel strongly about that when it comes to lasagna especially.

I am totally with Peter den Boer on this one. Several of my wife's dishes are just as good if not better as leftovers. And, Bob "RealMan" Timm, leftovers are actually consumed or tossed quickly. I like Thanksgiving leftovers. Enjoy your day.

Good morning, Bob... we always have left-overs in my house... first, there's generally just two of us. Second, when I'm cooking I often cook to make sure I get two meals out of the dish I'm preparing so on some nights all I need to do is heat something up. Even when we eat out, we bring home leftovers.

We do too Nina Hollander, Broker . We ask for a doggie bag but the dog never sees those left overs. 🙄

Our leftovers are consumed in following days for lunch, and I love having a lunch choice. I purposely make more food than I need for a meal so we'll have some leftovers. But we all have our own process!

Kat Palmiotti I usually appreciate the left overs because if they are not there the choice is a corndog or a TV dinner.

Too funny.  It was difficult but just yesterday I thru some grapes out.  Did not even open the zip lock but just knew I would regret not tossing them.  lol   m

That would be a tough call in our house as well Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint-Idaho . Grapes are a favorite in our home.

All of us need to be alert to food safety during the hot summer weather.

We have another very hot day in Maryland.

I've only experienced food poisoning once Roy Kelley and I don't ever want to repeat that experience. In my case it was some apple cider from my brothers refrigerator.

My only case of severe food poisoning took place during a visit to Russia and after eating some food purchased on the street.

Good morning Bob,

I always like to have leftovers. I'm cooking for one now so like to make enough for 3 dinners and then I can freeze one and keep another for another night. Now that its summer it's easier I'm hungry for salads, fruits and vegetables!

Hello Bob,  I watch the dates on our left over and if I have lots I freeze what I can and date them also.

Keeping a record of when they were originally cooked is a great idea Will Hamm

Hi Bob,
I love leftovers! I wonder if your sister does throw food out or if she rations each portion to whoever she is cooking for.

It's been years since I've had the opportunity to look into her fridge Carol Williams but I believe she has been true to her word. Like you and many others I like my left overs as well.

Good Afternoon Bob "RealMan" Timm

Cold grapes are one of my favorite snack fruits but lately, the grapes seem to be lacking taste (maybe it's my tastebuds). Pam keeps the refrigerator pretty devoid of leftovers. We do have kitchen review meals weekly.

The quality of grapes does not seem very consistent in our home either Doug Dawes . One week the green grapes are superior to the red ones and the next it's the other way around.
