Mid-summer Brings Changes

I just noticed yesterday that the yard is browning up. So now the big decision... do I let it go dormant/brown or do I quadruple our water bill and start the sprinklers up? Water is not cheap in Minot ND.

I see advantages to both. If I let it go dormant I save a bundle on my water bill and it would be much less mowing. If I water it the yard then subsequently the house looks better (a point those selling their homes should note). So what to do?

I've long looked at installing a sprinkler system as every home that I know has one has a great looking yard. The positive there is the good looking yard and the negative is the cost and maintenance of a sprinkler system. Add to that the cost of the water. I believe a system uses far less water than a hose and sprinkler system but then again I often see automatic systems watering the lawn when God is doing the job... seems wasteful to me.

Hi Bob,
It is a dilemma for many. I am fortunate to live in a place with irrigation water and an automatic sprinkler system, so there is no question here about what to do. The temperatures now are requiring extra water, and no additional cost.

I have to admit that the appeal of a sprinkler system sounds very good Carol Williams

Good evening Bob,

It is a dilemma and it depends (as Michael Jacobs  would say) on how important it is to you as a homeowner to have green grass. I've seen some let their grass go and then they have to replace their grass and that's a whole other expense!

We water the grass around our house when we are in the dryer season, in an effort to keep our home as fire proof as possible. Luckily we are on a well so there is no charge for the water.

I've checked into having a well dug into our in-town property and being it is allowed I just may do that Kat Palmiotti . I understand the "fire wall" aspect very well.

We have an in-ground sprinkler system and have had in all our homes. Then again, we live in HOA communities who would be "after us" if we neglected our lawn. Fortunately, moving is not an issue... it's part of our HOA fees and our lawn is moved and blown weekly.

I could live with that aspect of a HOA Nina Hollander, Broker . HOA's are very rare here.

Bob "RealMan" Timm and it's just the opposite here at my end... more HOA communities than not.

Timmothy's toon is so funny, Bob!  I will never quite look at my lawn in the same way.

Myrl Jeffcoat it's not a lawn, it's a guinea pig feeding ground 😊.
