The ABCs of Life: D

By
Education & Training with Although I'm retired, I love sharing my knowledge and learning from other real estate industry professionals.

Dear Michelle,

Here we are at letter #4 in the alphabet series of Life Lessons.

Determination can guide you through even the most difficult life challenges and help you achieve things you never even imagined.  I have discovered that achieving something difficult makes many other things seem like child's play.

I used to sew quite a bit when I was younger. I didn't do it so much because I loved doing it, as the fact that I saved a lot of money by making my own clothes. In those days, it was far less expensive to buy fabric, patterns, and notions than to buy clothes.  That's not really the case these days. Don't get me wrong. I didn't dislike sewing, it just wasn't something I would have done if it hadn't been necessary.

I was involved in 4-H during my high school years, so I did sewing for projects to enter 4-H and Grange competitions. I won many state championships for sewing and knitting. But, the experience I remember the most is when I made a dress that placed 2nd in an Oregon State Grange contest. To many people, that would have been good enough, but not for me. I wasn't used to being in 2nd place, and I didn't like it. I was determined to be #1 the next year.

So, what did I do? I selected a very difficult pattern that required pink and white checked gingham fabric and hand-smocking for the next year's contest. I made sure every single check matched, even on the hem. Did I win #1 in the State competition? Yes, I did. And because I won the state competition, the dress was entered into the National competition. It won #1 at the national level, too. That wasn't my original intention, but sometimes, when you're determined enough, even bigger things happen than you even imagine.  I was told there were 55,000 entries. I won a sewing machine, a typewriter, $200, and lots of media coverage. $200 in those days is probably equivalent to about $2,000 these days. I'm sure the sewing machine and typewriter were probably worth a similar amount. I still have the sewing machine.

I don't tell you any of that to brag. It just illustrates that you can be really good at things you don't necessarily love simply through dedication and determination and great things can happen. Imagine what you can do if you focus on what you DO love. Things beyond your imagination can happen.

That is also when I learned that doing something difficult makes many other things seem easy. It's all relative.

The Bible speaks about this kind of unwavering spirit in many places, and I want to share some of my favorites with you.

Once again, I will refer to Philippians 4:13, which says, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." This verse reminds us that with faith and determination, there is nothing we cannot achieve or overcome. It reminds us that when we rely on God's strength, we can face any challenge with confidence and courage.

Another inspiring verse is found in Joshua 1:9, which says, "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." This passage encourages us to be determined and fearless, knowing that we are never alone. God is always by our side, guiding us and giving us the strength to persevere.

Determination is not just about reaching your goals; it's also about the journey and the growth that happens along the way. It's about learning from your mistakes and moving forward with faith and courage.

Again, I leave you with these words:
"Follow your heart, but take your brain with you."

Sealed with hugs,
Grandma Carol

Hello Carol - you are diligently and delightfully working your way through the alphabet.  Although I don't have a clue exactly what's next - it seems your efforts might be considered effective.  And, of course, memorable.

Hi Michael Jacobs
It occurred to me this morning that I should have include "diligent" in this last letter. I think I might make an addendum to that one. 😊

Good morning Carol. "Follow your heart, but take your brain with you." Unfortunately many follow their heart and leave their brains at the door. Look around the room, plenty of heart, no brains in sight. Enjoy your day.

Hi Wayne Martin
That has become one of my favorite sayings. It covers a lot of territory, doesn't it?

Hi Carol... I remember that story. And I remember that picture of the gingham dress. I never got the hang of sewing, so of course, I'm envious. But I did do well at needlepoint until my old eyes gave out. As for determination, this might be the best definition I've ever heard:

Determination is not just about reaching your goals; it's also about the journey and the growth that happens along the way. It's about learning from your mistakes and moving forward with faith and courage.

There is a lot of value in the journey. I remember having to start using "readers" for needlepoint at the age of 40. Now, with my arthritic fingers, I can't do needlepoint or knitting. I can still sew if I want to, though.  My sewing these days is pretty well limited to minor repairs.

Carol Williams hi Carol... my fingers still work. But even with readers, my eyes don't unless I have more light than anyone could provide!

Your comment reminded me of my husband. I used to find him reading in dim light. I'd turn on the light for him, and he would say, "That's better!"  Like he couldn't have thought of that? He was a scientist, for heaven's sake. LOL

Hello Miss Carol Williams - I love that "Follow your Heart - But take your Brain with you.  I hear a song in the making with that one.

I recall you telling me the other night "I am very competitive."  Reading this illustrates that you have always been competitive and second place is not good enough.

"wasn't my original intention, but sometimes, when you're determined enough, even bigger things happen than you even imagine."  So True.

Another wonderful post, and enjoyable read, Carol.

I have tempered my competitiveness a bit as I've aged, realizing I do have some limitations. Now, in golf, for instance, I like to do well, but it's not the most important thing. I'm in it for the fun now, as my song Swinging With My Friends alludes to. 😊

Like you, when I was younger, I sewed a lot.  I made my own clothes, and those of my kids.  However, something has changed.  When my sewing machine finally died a few years ago, I bought a new Singer.  It lasted a couple years, and then the technology in it shorted out, so I bought another.  The same thing happened, so instead of buying another Singer, I bought a Brother.  I can't even manage to get the bobbin to load properly.  What is going on with newer sewing machines?  They are junk!

*That pink and white checkered dress is amazing, Carol.

Hi Myrl Jeffcoat
I hear ya. I still have my machine from 1966. It needs some repair work because it tangles the thread, but I can't seem to find anyone who does that kind of thing. I hate buying the newer cheaply made stuff.

Hi Carol- I love every bit of this!!! The only notable thing I sewed was a stuffed chair I gave to an old boyfriend. I wish I still had the chair (not the BF)  I remember your winning but had forgotten that you went on to win the National competition.

Your post is a reminder that with talent and ability, the 3rd ingredient needed to really excel is DETERMINATION.

Hi Kathy Streib
Determination can offset some lack of talent, but determination is required even if you have all the talent in the world.

I laughed at the boyfriend comment. 😂

People are not being taught how to "think". They're being told what to believe... or just believe they can do plaything they want.

What a wonderful post!!  I am a rustic seamstress... but I sew on my Mom's old sewing machine from the 1960's.  It doesn't have bells and whistles and it sews a little rough- but the sound of it humming along brings me such joy. :-)  Thank you for such a great post and lesson on determination !!  Love it!  Kath
