Dear Michelle,
Here we are at letter #4 in the alphabet series of Life Lessons.
Determination can guide you through even the most difficult life challenges and help you achieve things you never even imagined. I have discovered that achieving something difficult makes many other things seem like child's play.
I used to sew quite a bit when I was younger. I didn't do it so much because I loved doing it, as the fact that I saved a lot of money by making my own clothes. In those days, it was far less expensive to buy fabric, patterns, and notions than to buy clothes. That's not really the case these days. Don't get me wrong. I didn't dislike sewing, it just wasn't something I would have done if it hadn't been necessary.
I was involved in 4-H during my high school years, so I did sewing for projects to enter 4-H and Grange competitions. I won many state championships for sewing and knitting. But, the experience I remember the most is when I made a dress that placed 2nd in an Oregon State Grange contest. To many people, that would have been good enough, but not for me. I wasn't used to being in 2nd place, and I didn't like it. I was determined to be #1 the next year.
So, what did I do? I selected a very difficult pattern that required pink and white checked gingham fabric and hand-smocking for the next year's contest. I made sure every single check matched, even on the hem. Did I win #1 in the State competition? Yes, I did. And because I won the state competition, the dress was entered into the National competition. It won #1 at the national level, too. That wasn't my original intention, but sometimes, when you're determined enough, even bigger things happen than you even imagine. I was told there were 55,000 entries. I won a sewing machine, a typewriter, $200, and lots of media coverage. $200 in those days is probably equivalent to about $2,000 these days. I'm sure the sewing machine and typewriter were probably worth a similar amount. I still have the sewing machine.
I don't tell you any of that to brag. It just illustrates that you can be really good at things you don't necessarily love simply through dedication and determination and great things can happen. Imagine what you can do if you focus on what you DO love. Things beyond your imagination can happen.
That is also when I learned that doing something difficult makes many other things seem easy. It's all relative.
The Bible speaks about this kind of unwavering spirit in many places, and I want to share some of my favorites with you.
Once again, I will refer to Philippians 4:13, which says, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." This verse reminds us that with faith and determination, there is nothing we cannot achieve or overcome. It reminds us that when we rely on God's strength, we can face any challenge with confidence and courage.
Another inspiring verse is found in Joshua 1:9, which says, "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." This passage encourages us to be determined and fearless, knowing that we are never alone. God is always by our side, guiding us and giving us the strength to persevere.
Determination is not just about reaching your goals; it's also about the journey and the growth that happens along the way. It's about learning from your mistakes and moving forward with faith and courage.
Again, I leave you with these words:
"Follow your heart, but take your brain with you."
Sealed with hugs,
Grandma Carol
