Moving Sucks!

By

There's no other way to say it. My wife and I are both in agreement on this point. The entire process is nothing short of exhausting, both physically and mentally. From the endless packing and purging before you pack, to the countless trips to and from the moving truck (that’s why you hire movers!), it's a marathon that tests your patience and stamina. And let's not forget the chaos that inevitably ensues when you're trying to find that one crucial item buried somewhere in a sea of boxes that you hope that you did not get rid of.

The stress doesn't just impact us; it affects our belongings too. Though, I will say that we have found that moving much of the furniture costs almost as much as buying new.  Hey, new house, new furnishings.  The constant handling, the jostling during transport, and the inevitable bumps and scratches can take a toll on our treasured possessions. It's disheartening to see the things we've carefully curated over the years suffer damage. Yet, despite all this, we power through, fueled by the vision of our new home.

Once the boxes are finally unloaded and the last piece of furniture is in place, a different kind of challenge begins: the unpacking. The mountain of boxes that seemed insurmountable gradually diminishes as we unearth our belongings. It's a laborious process, but there's a certain satisfaction in seeing our new house slowly transform into a home. Each item finds its place, and with every box emptied, we breathe a little easier, hopefully.

After the last box is unpacked and everything is put away, we can finally relax. The sense of relief is palpable. We can unwind and enjoy the fruits of our labor (after much Ibuprofin), or ordeal, however one chooses to look at it. It's a moment of triumph, knowing we've overcome the monumental task of moving. We sit back, take a deep breath, and let the stress melt away, replaced by a growing sense of contentment.

I can confidently say that despite the challenges, the move itself was worth it. Our new home is everything we hoped for and more. We love the house, but more than that, we love the view. It's what drew us to this place in the first place, and it hasn't disappointed. Every morning, we wake up to a sight that takes our breath away, and every night we get to see the majestic sunset, reminding us why we endured the trials of moving.

This view, which we often call our 'million dollar' view, is truly spectacular. It’s a daily reminder of why we went through the hassle of moving. The lake (55 acres), and the tranquil horizon make every bit of stress and every sore muscle worthwhile (the new hot tub helps too). It's a piece of paradise that we get to call our own, and it makes the entire ordeal fade into the background.

In the end, moving might suck, but it's a means to an end. It's the bridge that took us from our old life to this new, beautiful chapter. And as we sit on our porch, looking out at our million-dollar view, we know without a doubt that it was all worth it.

Hi Jeffrey- I was nodding my head as I read your post because we've moved around 8 times or more!  It's not just the physical move and packing, unpacking, sorting, etc. but if you move as we did to a different area, then it's also finding new doctors, etc.

In the end, it's as you said...worth it!!!!   Judging from your photo...it most definitely is worth it.

Hi Kathy Streib ,

I wholeheartedly agree with you.  Getting to know and find new doctors among other things can be a pain.   But, as you have said, well worth it.

Absolutely, moving does suck and Realtors should move every 5-7 years to be able to empathize with their clients. That being said there are ways to make it easier, like hiring an experienced Realtor who has moved at least once!!

Hi June Piper-Brandon ,

I wouldn't wish moving on anybody, even though at times it's a necessity.

Hello Jeffrey - I doubt many will say packing and moving is an enjoyable experience.  It is definitely laborious and time consuming. Plus, it has moments of frustration.   But you're right, there is something quite special about finding a place where it seems like it has been worth the effort.  Congratulations on your move.

Hi Michael Jacobs ,

Packing is definitely NOT a pleasant experience.  Frustration runs amok during this process. But you are right, it's well worth the effort

Good morning, Jeffrey. I agree. I've moved as a single professional, as a married professional, as a trailing spouse. I've moved nationally, locally, and internationally. I've lost count of the number of times I've moved! It's a mind-boggling exercise. But when you land in a place you really want to live in... it pays off.

Hi Nina Hollander, Broker ,

Being a 'Navy brat' to an officer, I am no stranger to moving.  As I get older, it's not something that I want to experience anymore!  As much as you have moved, I'm sure that you agree.

Jeffrey Richman you got that right! We moved last in 2006 and at that time I was only 57 and that move just about did me in. I have maybe one more move left in me at this stage.

I couldn't agree more, one of the things I dread most in life is having to move or helping someone else move, haha.

Hi Brian England ,

It amazes me that all of my friends are really busy the day that I have to move!

Oh yes, moving does indeed suck! But the end result is a new home, and if it's the right one, then it's worth it.

I agree about the furniture. We didn't bring all our furniture when we did our last move, and actually, probably brought more than we needed to. It makes sense to buy new in some cases.

Hi Kat Palmiotti ,

New furniture helps to signify new beginnings (IMO)

When the day comes that we need to move, there will be a lot of anguish and also a few dumpsters. Not something we are looking forward to doing.

Hi Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 ,

Many dumpsters were needed as well as much anguish.

Jeffrey Richman our last move was in 1981.  I am NOT looking forward to our next move in the near future, even though when the time comes it will be very much needed

Hi George Souto ,

My suggestion to you is to not move unless you absolutely have to or the Mrs tells you that you are!

I can remember my first move back in the 1960s.  I threw a few boxes full of my belongings into the trunk of my 1960 Corvair, and we were off.  Fast forward to today's world.  I have lived in my current home for 41 years.  I have accumulated so much stuff, it would take a couple of moving vans to transport me elsewhere.

Hi Myrl Jeffcoat ,

I accumulated so many things that my wife forbade me to get near the house as she gave/threw out over 25 boxes of stuff.
