July 9 2008 by Jim W Hildreth Broker RE/Max of Sonora, CA

As a candidate for the Sonora city council, I decided that each day prior to the election, I would go door to door to introduce myself.

At one of the homes, I introduced myself Jim Hildreth and told the woman occupant that I was running for the city council.

She was very abrupt and told me that I should not waste her time as that I was a Realtor and she watched realtor's , developers rip off the community and then take the profits and then move out of town.

I told her quickly that I did more in the community than just being a Broker and for example, I was also a volunteer fireman within the city and when I went to calls at 3:00am, it wasn't because of a listing, but it was that I "Cared" for the community.

She cut me off and told me to have a good day and shut the door.

The next morning was raining and the weather was turning cold, my pager went off and her home was on fire. It was a flu fire.

As I was coming down the ladder, with my fire coat and helmet, I took off my helmet and in a sweeping fashion said the following. "Good Morning your Realtor is here"

Her response "You got my vote"

I lost the election by 13 votes ran 4 years later and served on the Sonora City Council for 12 years, including 2 years as Mayor.
