Real Estate as an Olympic Sport

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Beam & Branch Realty TREC #547752

With the 2024 Olympics about to begin, I was thinking about the "sport" we engage in with the world of real estate. And, if you don't know that real estate takes skills and finesse, you most likely aren't in the arena full-time! This business has more twists and turns than Simone Biles' floor routine!

So, let's have some fun and pretend that real estate is an Olympic event! Here are some of the events I think would be included:

🇺🇸 Tenacious Transaction - Every single transaction has a life of its own. There are no two transactions that are the same. Therefore, agents must be able to be on their toes to make the necessary adjustments when needed.

🇺🇸 Persistent Property Search - Researching and understanding the properties in our area takes more than skill. It takes hours of research, being out there and viewing neighborhoods and homes, and, a "6th Sense" that comes with experience.

🇺🇸 Masterful Market Knowledge - Along with the persistent property search comes the very important part of understanding your local market. Agents must know the data, crunch the numbers, and also have a clear understanding of national trends. These skills again do not happen by chance.

🇺🇸 Intentional Interaction - Another important event we participate in on a daily basis, is that of interacting with people. We are constantly in front of potential new clients, current clients, mortgage lenders, title professionals, insurance agents, inspectors, appraisals, HOA personnel, and so many more. These interactions take skills and intention as we navigate all of the conversations that are needed for the various transactions that are happening.

🇺🇸 Balancing Battle - I think one of the most difficult aspects of our "sport" involves the ability to balance all areas of our lives. With the myriad of activities required from contract-to-close, learning to "balance" our lives is essential. Without balance, we can easily lose our footing, drop the many balls we have in the air, and end up falling. Taking care of ourselves, our families, and our businesses takes discipline and skills that require refining on a daily basis.

🇺🇸 Finishing with Finesse - At the end of the day, if we don't finish well, we have not earned a gold medal. Finishing well means getting to the finish line whether that be a successfully closed transaction, a new listing property executed, happy clients, good relationships with other agents and vendors, or, knowing when to pivot, change gears, and go in a different direction.

I am sure I have left off many other areas or, "events" but I think I have the main activities listed. No doubt, we may not end up with a real, "gold medal" around our necks, but at the end of any transaction, when we have happy and satisfied clients, we have certainly won! Real estate is not for the faint of heart. This sport can change on a dime!

Are you ready to put on those real estate track shoes and go the extra mile? Have you stayed limber for those times of extreme market shifts? And, have you trained to be able to endure whatever the market throws our way?

Stay loose, stay focused, and keep your

eyes on the finish line!

Great post, Paula!  We share a love of making analogies. I've often referred to real estate as a tough mistress but as an Olympic Sport? I like that better! And... we compete in multiple events simultaneously!

This is a winning analogy - gold medal winner Paula!  I love it!   It takes true grit to be an excellent broker or agent and that takes time, patience and continually learning. Real Estate changes quickly as we need to be #1 at figuring that out and keeping on top of all the nuances.  Congratulations on the gold star - well deserved!

Hi Paula:

I love the creativity of your post and an excellent analogy. Success in real estate depends on a multitude of factors just as it does in every Olympic event. The road to that success is not an easy one.

For the Olympic athletes, their sport is their job.

For me, Real Estate is my job.

I may not get a Gold Medal but the earnings help me to enjoy my life. Much as an Olympic athlete enjoys wearing their Gold Medal.

I watched the opening ceremony, and have monitored the traffic both positive and negative. I have also watched some of the coverage and honestly I am not really impressed.  This is just my opinion.  I do remember the event from my youth and have better feelings from those times.
