Hello Everyone, I wrote this blog post and thought maybe someone one here might find it informative to hear a little about how Bob Webb of Central Ohio homes handles their custom build design selections. I had never blogged about an interview before, but I think overall the message came across well. Any Ohio agents, I would say that if you are ever near Lewis Center, stop in and check it out. It was quite an experience. Hope you enjoy!

Building Your Custom Home with Bob Webb - The Design Process
Interview with Jill Dick
Q: How long have you been with Bob Webb helping clients with the design process?
A: I’ve been with Bob Webb for 18 months, but I started in my first design studio back in 1999.
Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself.
A: I was born and raised in Columbus. I moved to Lexington, Kentucky, in my early 20s to run a business, and eventually returned to Columbus. After various jobs, I found my passion in interior design, which has been my focus since 1999.
Q: What do you feel is unique about the Bob Webb design process?
A: We aim to complete all selections before digging begins, ensuring everyone is on the same page. Our smaller company size allows us to provide personalized attention, making sure our clients are always taken care of.
Q: What's your favorite part of the Bob Webb design process?
A: My favorite part is working with clients and making sure they are happy. It's exciting to help someone figure out their home. Budgets are important, but helping clients find the look they want within that budget is always rewarding.
Q: How would you recommend a client prepare for a Bob Webb design appointment with you?
A: I typically break the appointments down into Exterior selections and Interior selections. I let folks know we're doing exteriors, so have ideas in mind of colors and things like that, however, depending on the community we may be limited on the colors available. That can come as a shocker for some because lately it seems that the white exterior is going quickly. We'll walk through it and make those selections and then at that appointment I let them know at the next appointment we're going to be working on the main floor of your house and we're going to start on the bigger parts of that puzzle and narrow down to the details. We do flooring first, and then we go to the primary bath and work on that, and then on to the next large item. Once we have that done, we can begin to work on the smaller details.
Q: Do they have an expectation of how long the appointment should take?
A: I plan on the exterior meeting lasting about an hour, and then the interior meetings I plan on them lasting three hours - no longer than that. After three hours your brain shuts down, we've looked at a ton of colors, and a ton of patterns. If we have an out-of-town buyer, we will certainly press on in order to meet their schedule! It just seems to work best if clients have the ability to take a break. Depending on the size of the home, we may end up with three Interior meetings in total. Our final meeting is a recap of all the selections, and a final sign off. This is where we are auditing the paperwork making sure I've got everything listed the way they want because that's how things are going to be ordered, so while it's the most boring meeting we ever have in my opinion, it's so crucial because everything is done off of that paperwork.
Q: Do you do you advise clients before they come into these appointments to bring photos videos anything from online like things that they like I saw this like Pinterest?
A: Pinterest is great! Yes, storyboards and inspiration pictures are awesome! What I advise them to do is don't get focused on a specific tile because that may not be available either in this region or could be an old picture and that product is discontinued, but to focus on the vibe that you like, or the pattern you like. I once had a client, before the internet, that couldn’t quite tell me what she liked, but was able to bring in 15 books of pictures that she didn’t like. And that is truly helpful in crafting the feeling that someone wants in a room or in the house! Even when a client can’t quite pinpoint what they want, they can tell me what they don’t want, and sometimes the pictures can convey what they can’t quite put into words.
Q: If someone is building with Bob Webb, do they have options outside of what's in here in the design studio?
A: I advise clients, especially because our studios’ based in America's Floor Source, when I go outside of this room I have less control over the pricing, the product itself, and the delivery timing. I understand every product is not necessarily a good fit for them, so they can choose alternatives. However, if all the materials are purchased through us, we can better protect the client, their home, and their warranty.
Q: OK, give us the scoop, what trends are you seeing that you're on board with?
A: I have a tile background, so I do appreciate that tiles are getting larger - fewer grout lines. The world in general is trying to go lower maintenance, I mean we all don't have time. Unfortunately, because it is a newer trend, like there are tiles 24 x 48 that I'll be bringing in, it’s more labor intensive, and it's a more premium price. But I do like that things are going that way. I always seem to like the more expensive options…haha
In follow up to this, I left and went to Atlanta for five years and then we decided to come back to be close to a family. I miss Atlanta because I miss, it's a visual for me, I miss the different architecture! We don't have that degree in Central Ohio and that is one thing that I would love to see more of - this influence of different architecture in the community. That's just personal, but I think there's so much opportunity, and I think as Columbus grows and folks flow in with Intel, the folks that are going to come in, we're going to start to see for change which I'm excited about. The farmhouse style will always be very strong, we're in the Midwest, but it'll be nice for me to see some variety in home styles - it's eye candy for me!
