Life in Destin Florida- Understand Our Beach Flags

Ready to spend some quality time at one of the Destin Florida area beaches? Take a moment and learn more about the flag system we use to help the public stay safe...

1) Green-- swimming conditions are perfect. Think flat calm with no real undertow. Honestly I can't remember the last time I saw a green flag on the beach. Well, except when Michigan State fans hit town on Spring break! Even under perfect conditions, know your limits!

2) Yellow-- The most common flag in summer. Expect waves, and maybe even some current. Again visitors need to know their limits. Your strong swimming skills from that Arkansas creek do not make you Aquaman. If you do get in distress, ask for help! Trust me having the lifeguards help you ashore is less embarrassing than the paramedics.

3) Red--Dude, stay out of the water. Yes, you. I've seen folks grab a 99 cent Walmart float and head to sea. The sad part is when you get in trouble someone will have to attempt to rescue you. It's not uncommon for someone to drown trying to recover a swimmer in distress. Just sit on the beach or go swim in the pool.

4) Double-Red- MASSIVE waves that would make Poseidon reach for a life jacket. The sheer power of such surf conditions is a sight to behold, just do it from the pier. Law enforcement will write tickets to anyone who enters the water, rightfully so.

5) Purple-- Ever seen Jaws?

This post was hard to write but I felt it necessary. I have witnessed people drown in front of me. I will spare details, but the heroic young life guard was crying after recovering the victim. And the poor family had a front row seat, as did everyone else on the beach that day.

We LOVE tourists here in Destin Florida. The money you guys spent feeds our local economy. Have a good time, but please be SAFE, we want to see you guys in 2025!

Hello Doug... I'm sure many people don't know what the different flag colors mean. I believe some of the North Carolina beaches do the same.

Hi Doug- what good information to get out!!! I lived off and on in Delray Beach for 30 years and you have to know the flag colors.  I don't envy the lifeguards!!!

Hello Doug - being as well as staying alert is part of responsible beach going.  In Destin Florida or wherever one enjoys stepping into such waters.

Spot on. And with small children it is soooo easy to get distracted.
