The Ongoing Desire for Crystal Balls or Magic Blue Rocks

By
Real Estate Agent with Dirt Road Real Estate SA676002000

For years, mankind has looked for a way to tell the future as in crystal balls.  My sense is the reasons for this include the lack of being prepared, fear and internal insecurities.

Then from my executive leadership and sales coaching practice, I observed many individuals seeking what I called the magic blue rocks or what others would called the quick fix.

In either case, the ongoing desire for crystal balls or magic blue rocks appears to be also present within the real estate industry by both real estate agents as well as sellers and buyers.

For example, all the changes in real estate have exploded with “experts” providing cloudy crystal balls and even in some instances magic blue rocks. Yet, in reading all these articles by “experts” most have been covered by Zig Ziglar a true sales guru. There are also current and past sales “experts” who have discussed the basics of sales, relationship building and the overall sales process for the last 50 plus years.

Then there are those clients and customers continually asking something like “What do you think this property is worth going forward?”

In Arizona, the AZ Association of REALTORS® (AAR) created the MARKET CONDITION ADVISORY (MCA). This document was vented by attorneys. The MCA basically states markets go up and markets go down, there is no promise for future increased financial equity. This MCA is the response to the desire for crystal balls or magic blue rocks.

For those real estate agents or REALTORS® wanting success in this current market has always been the same as in past markets by understanding and employing a consistent sales process. Unfortunately, many agents lack basic sales skills along with emotional intelligence because they were exposed by others promoting the crystal ball or magic blue rocks.

Real estate agents and REALTORS® should first remember there are no crystal balls when it comes to any industry especially one that is always changing. Second, the magic blue rocks do not exist. Looking for the quick fix will not provide any sustainable real estate sales success.

Hello Leanne - things that glisten, glitter or glow seem to meet glitches far too often.  And then they are goners.   Choose carefully.

Those words "Choose Carefully" always remind me of a scene in the mobile "The Last Crusade" when the nefarious anthropologist was seeking the "Holy Grail."

I love the analogy Leanne and I agree it is difficult to predict the future, however the fuure MAY be easier to predict when we as REALTORS see any one of the following conditions:

1. Roof is 35+ years old

2. Hot Water heater is 10+ years old

3. Air Conditioner is 15+ years old

4. Electrical Box from the 1960s

5. Cast Iron Pipes ffrom the 1960s

My crystal balls is telling me....

Crystal Ball

True and by pointing these obvious items out such as exterior exposed wood, we can suggest these issues may be a problem base on our experience. Good morning to you and thank you Jeff

Good morning Leanne,

What a great post with a good analogy. I've always said there is no magic crystal ball and looking for the quick fix with anything will not provide any sustainable results!

Hi Leanne I always thought the Market Conditions form  was a great idea.  Most people usually say, after going over it with them - yup markets go up and down.   It's like clockwork! Quick fixes - no such thing.  Good ole Zig Ziglar was one of the very first speakers I saw when I was just a babe.

What is so good about AZ is the forms. And yes the MCA just confirms what many people know. It is just a gentle reminder for our sellers and buyers. Thank you Anna "Banana" Kruchten

Good morning, Leanne... when asked questions about the future that I can't answer, I tell everyone my crystal ball has been in the repair shop for years. And I also always say there are no silver bullets in real estate... for agents and for the public.

Love your responses about the "crystal ball" being in the repair shop for years. And yes there are no silver bullets in real estate for all parties. Thank you and Happy Thor's Day to you as well.

My crystal ball is broke will no plans to repair, Leanne. The only things we can count on are that change is going to happen, we just need to strap in and prepare for the ride!

Well yours is broken and I gave mine away years ago when it wasn't repairable. Thanks for the sharing of your thoughts.

Hi Leanne,

I am tired of the "talking heads". They go on and on about what they think will happen, then something different happens, and they start talking about what happened.

Apologies for the delay in the acknowledgement. I agree about talking heads. Remind me of those bobble heads always nodding. Good morning to you.
