Asphalt shingle roof might be the solution to your roofing needs.

Asphalt shingles are crafted from a base of fiberglass or organic materials and coated with asphalt to enhance water resistance and durability. The top layer often includes granules that provide UV protection and add color.

Three types of asphalt shingles are available on the market:

Three-tab Shingles

Three-tab Shingles are the most basic and economical type of asphalt shingles, making them ideal for budget-conscious homeowners.

These shingles are characterized by their flat, uniform appearance with three tabs or cutouts along the lower edge.

Architectural Shingles (Dimensional)

Dimensional shingles are comparatively thicker and more durable than three-tab shingles. They have a layered, dimensional look that mimics wood or slate, offering enhanced aesthetics and performance.

You should opt for architectural shingles if you’ve got a flexible budget and value aesthetics and durability.

Luxury Shingles

Luxury shingles are the finest of the three and are designed to resemble high-end roofing materials like slate or cedar shakes.

They provide the best durability and aesthetic appeal, making them perfect for homeowners with upscale homes.

Now that you’ve got a general idea of what asphalt shingles are, let’s review the benefits of asphalt roof shingles to see why they’re great for your roof:

Affordable

Asphalt shingles are one of the most affordable and popular roofing materials available, costing between $4.25 and $12.25 per square foot.

In comparison, composite shingles range from $8 to $14 per square foot, wood shingles between $6 and $14, and metal roof shingles between $8 and $14.

Their affordability makes asphalt shingles a practical choice for homeowners seeking a balance of cost and quality in their roofing investments.

Durable

Asphalt shingles are renowned for their longevity.

With proper maintenance, they typically last two decades or more, preventing frequent roof replacements. Features such as a granule coating protect them against UV rays and weather conditions, making them more durable.

Easier to Install and Maintain

“Homeowners favor asphalt shingles for their simple and quick installation process, which reduces both labor costs and time.” said Donnie Stitt, the owner of Ohio Valley Roofing & Guttering.

Additionally, homeowners appreciate that asphalt shingles require minimal maintenance. With routine inspections and occasional cleanings, you can keep your roof in excellent condition.

Energy Efficient

Asphalt shingles reflect heat and reduce heat absorption, keeping interiors cooler during the hot summer months. This reflective property enhances indoor comfort and lowers energy bills by reducing the need for excessive air conditioning.

Sustainable

Manufacturers often make modern asphalt shingles from recycled materials, making them an eco-friendly choice. At the end of their lifespan, homeowners can recycle these shingles into new roofing materials or other products, reducing landfill waste.

Fire Resistant

Investing in fire-resistant roofing materials enhances your home's safety and security, offering peace of mind.

Asphalt shingles are fire resistant, with ratings ranging from Class A to Class C, where Class A provides the highest level of protection. This makes them the perfect choice for homeowners concerned about fire hazards.

Versatile and Visually Pleasing

Whether you prefer the traditional look of three-tab shingles or the dimensional appeal of architectural shingles, with asphalt shingles, customization options are plentiful. This versatility allows you to achieve the desired aesthetic that suits your home.

I think it is asphalt shingles on my roof and I am quite happy with them.  I always wonder if there is any benefit to a tiled roof over shingles, or if it is mainly just aestetics.
