Yes, the small mountain community of Cedaredge, CO has been discovered, but not by who you might think. Social media outlets are full of reports of people spotting bears in town. There is even the possibility a bear may have killed an animal several blocks west of the park.
Cedaredge Police Chief, Dan Sanders, is warning residents to use common sense and to not get too close to a bear. This warning came after social media reports of residents wanting to take cell phone selfies with the animals. Personally, I hope those reports are just people joking around.
A good friend of mine lives less than two blocks from the park, and she tells me there is a lot of bear scat in her yard. She hasn't seen a bear in town, though.
Bears sightings aren't usually typical in town, but out of town, it happens more frequently. I have two compost piles and an apricot tree full of fruit. I hope the bears decide to bypass my home and go somewhere else.
An urgent public safety notice warns to give the bears adequate space, don't bother them and DON'T FEED THEM. The bears are attracted to this area because of the numerous orchards. As we get closer to the fall season, the bears tend to become more active. They are looking to fill up on food before they head into hibernation.
If you see a bear, call the Delta County Dispatch non-emergency number. 970-874-2015. The sighting will then be reported to local law enforcement. Be safe out there.
