Columbia property consists only of the territory governed by the Columbia Association but larger areas are included under the name by the U.S. Postal Service. These include several other communities which predate Columbia, including Simpsonville, Atholton, and part of Clarksville. Columbia's master plan called for a series of ten self-contained villages, around which day-to-day life would revolve. The centerpiece of Columbia would be The Mall in Columbia and the man-made Lake Kittamaqundi. Each of the villages may contain middle and high schools, all villages have a shopping center, recreational facilities, a community center, a system of bike/walking paths, and homes.
In the 2020 census, Columbia had a population of 104,681. Columbia is midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC, making it a great community for commuters.
Columbia has a very diverse selection of housing from condo apartments to larger single-family homes and a variety of construction styles so that it would appeal to a wide cross-section of the population.
