Legacy Letter to New Real Estate Agents

I have had letters to each of my children and their children running through my head since Carol Williams shared her beautiful idea for this challenge last month. As there are ‘raw emotions’ with each of the above, sharing publicly would not be the right thing to do. So, I chose to go a different route this week for the challenge.

Being a cheerleader for new agents has always been a passion of mine. If you’re putting forth the effort, I’ll do anything in the world to help you be successful in this business…AND I’ll be your biggest cheerleader! Here is my letter to our future real estate stars:

To Our Future Real Estate Stars,

Welcome to the incredible journey of becoming a real estate agent. This profession offers limitless opportunities and immense satisfaction. As someone who has walked this path for 20 years, I want to share some insights that have been pivotal to my success and, more important to me, my fulfillment in this business.

Integrity

Integrity is the cornerstone of our profession. Always be honest and transparent with your clients, even when it’s difficult to do so. Your reputation is built on trust; once that trust is broken, it is almost impossible to rebuild. Make decisions that you can be proud of - and those that you would stand by, if questioned about those decisions.

Dependability

Be the rock your clients can rely on. Show up on time, follow through on your promises and be there when they need you. Live by your calendar, remembering that there are many people involved in this transaction beyond you - always show up. Dependability builds trust and trust is the foundation of every successful client relationship.

Responsibility

OWN IT! Take ownership of each and every one of your actions. If you make a mistake, own it and learn from it. Be accountable in every way - not only to your clients but also to yourself and your peers. This responsibility extends to staying updated with industry laws, market trends and new technologies.

Project Management

Real estate transactions involve many moving parts. Effective project management is key. Keep organized, maintain a timeline and communicate clearly with everyone involved. Use tools and systems that help you track progress and ensure nothing falls through the cracks. Always, always, ALWAYS have a back-up plan...or two or more!

Knowledge

Don’t EVER stop educating yourself. The real estate market is ever-changing and staying knowledgeable is crucial. Attend workshops, read industry publications and learn from your peers. The more you know, the better you can serve your clients and negotiate on their behalf. Don’t be ‘holier than thou’ when it comes to new things in our business; remain open-minded as you’ll never know when something new winds up being THE key to your success.

Negotiation

Negotiation is both an art and a science. Be prepared, know your facts and understand the needs and motivations of all parties involved. Always aim for a win-win outcome, where everyone feels they’ve gained something valuable but, NEVER FORGET FOR WHOM YOU ARE WORKING. Sharpen your negotiation skills through practice and learning from each experience. Take classes and read books about negotiating. This is one of THE most important things you will need to be at the top of your trade - hands down.

Treating People Right

Respect everyone you work with – clients, peers and team members alike. Your inspectors, attorneys, surveyors, contractors and other colleagues are essential to your success. Treat them with the same respect and professionalism you expect. A harmonious team absolutely delivers the best results.

NEVER Put Anything on the Back-Burner

Real estate is a dynamic field. Delaying tasks can cost you deals and damage your reputation. Prioritize your work, manage your time efficiently and tackle issues head-on as they arise.

Show That You Care

Clients are more than transactions; they are people with hopes and dreams. Show genuine care and interest in their needs. Go the extra mile to make their real estate experience positive and memorable. When people feel cared for, they trust you and value your service.

Add Levity Every Single Day

Life is FAR too short to take everything too seriously. Humor and levity can defuse tension, build rapport and make your interactions more enjoyable. A light-hearted approach can turn a stressful situation into a manageable one and leave a lasting positive impression.

In closing, remember that this career is as much about the people as it is about the properties. This career can take you to unimaginable places; remember, make these ‘habits’ yours and the world is your oyster!

Welcome to the world of real estate. Now, go out and make a difference!

Warm regards,
Debe Maxwell Charlotte NC Real Estate Broker

I love the twist of writing to future real estate agents. Our job as a "project manager" is on point. It is much less about sales and more about navigating rough waters.

YES, YES, YES!! I have never understood why more in our profession don't 'get' that, Pat Starnes-Front Gate Realty!

Debe Maxwell, CRS - to tell the truth, I was embarrased to write such a personal letter here on AR. I wish I had thought about your idea. For a professional site like this, it makes more sense. You did a great job.

I loved your letter and am so thankful that you shared that with us, Patricia Feager, ABR,CRS,GRI,MRP. There is a good deal of sadness going on in both of our boys' lives that it hardly seemed appropriate to share here. They are both working well through their challenges (as individuals, as wonderful spouses and as loving fathers too) - I just didn't need to highlight any of what they are dealing with publicly.

Debe Maxwell, CRS - I understand. It's very personal. As a family, I pray it all works out. Some of the biggest challenges are the greatest stories to be told - at another time. You did the right thing.

By the way, in the news in recent days there was a story about a mother and child. Her child had autism and couldn's speak, so they thought... The mother gave her child a cell phone to take pictures and she walked away leaving the child to explore and discover on her own.  The little child took pictures and named each item and she even said something like, "And that's my mom." Well, when I watched it, I was in tears. Here's the link: Mother hears child speak for the first time

Oh my gosh, thank you so much for both your kind words and for sharing this link, Patricia Feager, ABR,CRS,GRI,MRP! Liam has amazing parents who are so very attentive and are doing everything they can humanly do for him. I'm so proud of those two!

Hello Debe - not everything needs to be shared - how true is that?  That's a message that is share-worthy.

By addressing your letter to future real estate stars, you are providing them with the benefit of your time in the business in multiple ways.   Mission Accomplished!

Especially now, Kat Palmiotti. I've recently talked a couple of agents from dropping out of the business. It's so scary for newer agents - especially when they are not getting the training they need now.

Hi Debe,
Every point in your letter should be included in every new agent's Orientation session. In my experience, there is very little, if any, mentorship in the business. I say that because I was basically thrown to the wolves when I got into the business. We could do so much better.

Aug 01, 2024 06:53 AM
Debe Maxwell, CRS

Oh, we totally could do substantially better, Carol Williams - if only brokerages could see the forest for the trees. Fogging a mirror is one thing; understanding these principles and applying them each and every day actually GROWS a business!! Many brokerages are so worried about the immediate bottom line, they don't recognize training is not only an investment in that individual but, in THE BROKERAGE. I'll never understand that business style!

Everyone needs a mentor and you are a splendid candidate.  We are in the people business and you made direct actions necessary for future success as a real estate professional.  If newbies are trained properly they never leave you and become part of the family..

Oh, you're too kind, Eileen Burns 954.483.3912! We are most definitely in the people business and that is probably the #1 lesson for newbies.

Hi Debe - what a wonderfully written letter that is!  So full of great tips and really great advice for new agents.  Truthfully, I think there are a lot of ideas and tips for all agents who might need a refresh and/or a gentle nudge to try or do something new they hadn't thought of before.  Beautifully written and done in a way that most everyone could find a tip or two for themselves. I did!  Thanks for posting this!  Enjoy the rest of summer!

You are so sweet, Ann! I so appreciate your kind, thoughtful comment. I agree that many of these 'business lessons' are often used and then forgotten by most. I'm honored that I was able to give you a tip too!

Have a fabulous rest of your summer too!
