Thursday Thoughts

But they are applicable beyond AR and on any day. . .

Admittedly, this post started as a rant. For that reason, I kept it in unpublished status for a while. This time, I did not delete my ActiveRain draft. Instead, I chose to edit much most of it. However, I kept the overall theme in mind by sharing some longtime favorite quotes. I believe the following words of wisdom reflect my original intention. Perhaps better.

Keep your friends close and enemies closer

attributed to a Chinese proverb

When they go low, we go high

attributed to Michele Obama

Never wrestle with pigs.

You both get dirty, and the pig likes it.

Attributed to George Bernard Shaw

The images in this post are from canstockphoto.com. While I have observed stuff that I may not like or agree with on the pages of this community, much can be discovered on AR and. perhaps more importantly, elsewhere where respectful, perhaps admirable, behavior is regularly practiced. I believe differences of opinion may not always, or usually, be settled but unifying similarities may be discovered.

We face combinations of all sorts of things each day. Accentuate the positive - I repeat those words to myself. Over and over.

I originally thought this post would be members only with comments disabled. Now, I believe it makes a point beyond that initial thinking.

Strive to be better. Make it better than it was. Keep your eyes on your own paper and regardless of what others around you do or don't do, keep it real. Don't make it about you and you only. Gratitude is riches. Thank you for the post that makes all of us reflect Michael Jacobs !

Andrew Mooers | 207.532.6573 - thank you for including one of my favorite memories from the pen (opine) of Susan Emo.  Her response/comment of  Keeping your eyes on your own paper makes the grade for raising this discussion.   And it seems right as students return to school.

Michael Jacobs I so appreciate you remembering me and my "world famous quote" lol   I haven't been active here as I've been too busy "Keeping my head down and eyes on my own paper"!

Hello, Michael.

In the quiet of late, I find myself skimming past specific posts, untouched by comments. In these moments, I long for the depth and insight of thoughtful blogs gone by. Connecting with kindred spirits like yourself brings me joy as we share our thoughts and experiences.

Aura Alex - I understand.  There's no need for additional chaos in my mind, there's far too much without inviting additional visitors.

Of course, I search the blog roll for newly arrived members, those in the beginning days of posting or others attempting to reach that AR magical milestone of 500K and free membership.  Unfortunately, such searching has led to an unpleasant discovery of "why don't you comment on my post, self-promotion or other antics which are quite unattractive.  I digress.

I appreciate your comment and what you have brought to this community.

Ah, dear Michael Jacobs, fear not the great problem before you! What your eyes behold is neither a frosty Big Gulp nor a whimsical Slurpee but rather an enigmatic elixir of the imagination. 🙃

Good afternoon Michael Jacobs .  I've got a rant sitting in my drafts, but it is not as good as this one!  Who knows, maybe I will post someday.  Thanks for the smiles!

Brenda J. Andrew RENE, PSA, MRP, SRS - I have been known to collect more than a few rants.  While visiting AR as well as time spent in the real world.  Sometimes, it's good just to be able to share those thoughts in writing even if it remains unpublished and we are the only one who sees it. That's typically my way.

As for your rant, do what feels right for you.  Thank you for the comment. I appreciate it.

I guess I'm unaware of this negativity...no surprise since I'm only here a few times a week.

I love your quote choices, but even more I smiled when I saw the Bewitched Kravitz comment.

Aug 09, 2024 12:06 PM
Michael Jacobs

Sharon Tara - whenever I can slip in a 1960s era television sitcom reference, I'm "game".  Unfortunately, such things often leave many with a huh?-like response.  I am glad you caught it.

As for any AR hijinks, business as usual seems to exist in many senses of the term.

Aug 09, 2024 12:19 PM
Sharon Tara

Michael Jacobs Gladys Kravitz was a favorite of mine. Bewitched had a lot of great characters....Uncle Arthur another fav.

We are camping and I was flipping through the few tv channels we have available and found a favorite movie of mine....The Bad Seed. Are you familiar with it?

Aug 09, 2024 12:44 PM

Sharon Tara - was that about a young girl with a blonde pixie-like haircut from the 1960s or so???

Aug 09, 2024 02:29 PM
Sharon Tara

Michael Jacobs Little girl with blonde (white in a black and white movie) braids. She is very well behaved in front of others but has no sense of right or wrong and people who make her unhappy for one reason or another tend to die.

Aug 10, 2024 01:54 PM
Michael Jacobs

Sharon Tara - that's her image I'm recalling as i think of the movie.  I'm not sure I've ever seen the entire film - horror is not my favorite genre.

Aug 10, 2024 03:18 PM
Sharon Tara

Michael Jacobs I'm not a fan of horror. Maybe because it is a child and you don't see any real violence....this doesn't feel like a horror movie to me.

Aug 11, 2024 09:43 AM

Sharon Tara - I know the movie has developed a cult following of sorts since it was originally released.

Michael Jacobs, I have been on vacation and just popped in this week. Everything looked strange. Posts about Niche on Hoarders: It took me a bit to realize it was a joke. I have been so busy with Zoom meetings and seminars on new forms and changes that my head is spinning. So when I decided to write a post on AR, to be honest, I didn't. I hope  I am not one of the people you are talking about. There seems to be a negative vibe here.

Hannah Williams - welcome back.  I hope your vacation time was refreshing, relaxing and that you were able to recharge for the many changes that will happen around you.

I just said on Debe's post that I no longer engage with people looking for a fight. LOL.  I can debate all day long, in fact I was on a debate team in both high school and college and had lots of people tell me I should be an attorney.  But at the end of the day I really don't like arguing and won't and don't anymore.

But I learned a long time ago that you can disagree respectfully and I make every attempt to do so when I disagree and AM BEING ASKED to discuss.

Aug 10, 2024 08:12 AM

Tammy Lankford, - you make a powerful point.  ASKING prompts further examination.

As much as I have described the ActiveRainLand environment as a schoolyard at times, referencing it as a courtroom or anything else might be unavoidable.   AR is a snapshot of our bigger world, albeit with its own focus.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment.  Thinking as well as knowing when to pause remain important.

I think I'm glad I missed the negativity or whatever it was that happened. I don't have time for that kind of behavior. I subscribe to the first quote. I found several tomato hornworms on my what else...tomato plants.

Don't mess with my tomato plants because I will do great harm to you. Although the hornworms were kept in a jar for observation for weeks. I reminded myself of the old saying...Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Just in case you're interested, I learned a lot about those worms from watching them.

Aug 12, 2024 03:17 PM

Debbie Laity - like any community, there can be things noticed that are not may be subtle but still raise a concern like a cloud that is ready to burst.  In some ways, negativity or however it is described exists in all parts of life.   Anyway. . .

I can appreciate the message you reference about your tomato plants.  It has long been interesting to me to see how memories and recollections are recalled.  Makes me think of the term "earworm".    I think I sense a nuanced meaning now.   Thank you.

Hello, Michael Jacobs. These are some great quotes to remember, but normally avoid any negativity in the Rain, since it's a waste of my time and energy. There will always be someone who might disagree with your point of view, but we should always be respectful of one another.

Aug 13, 2024 10:23 AM

Jerry Newman - timewasters and things of many sorts that can annoy are part of real life let alone any social media site.  And as you say they are best avoided.  I tend to be able to ignore them when those kinds of comments find their way to my posts, but I admit they get me angry when I see them on other members' posts.
