A Machine Your Shade tree Mechanic Can't Fix.

It's getting harder and harder for us do-it-your-selfer's to work on our vehicles but can you imagine working on the B52 Stratofortress? Just walking from wing tip to wing tip is a 180' stroll.

I went to tech-school for a year to learn the principals of small engine repair. Just the advances from then (1972) to today I have no clue how to work on a lawnmower other then changing oil and the sparkplug.

With the many advances in building materials and construction practices, not to mention all the building codes, the only home I would dare construct would be a dog house for Baby.

Sorry Baby, no plumbing, no lighting.

Since I can barely make a ham sandwich, I have great respect for all good mechanics.

I respect good mechanics as well Michael Elliott . I think the advancements have gone so far today that you almost have to go to the dealer of the car brand you drive to get the work done correctly.

Technology has definitely made working under the tree in the back yard a thing of the past.

It sure has Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 and it's kind of sad as a man fixing his machine was the stuff many songs were written. My favorite:

I'm In Love With My Car (Queen)

Tell my girl I have to forget her, rather buy me a new carburetor, cars don't  back, they just blow an engine.

Good morning, Bob... looking forward to seeing Baby's new dog house. As for being a DIY on cars, appliances, etc. these days... so hard. Those are computers on wheels and behind encasements these days.

Even a dog house for Baby may not happen because she is to old to adjust to that but if I ever get a new puppy I'll make it happen Nina Hollander, Broker . I remember back in the early 70' my best friend bought a Gran Torino and it had this black box under the hood. Back then I think it's only function was to assist in timing BUT it was amazing innovation back then,

Good morning Bob. Having worked on cars from the late 50's to the early 70's, these days I let the techies connect their computers and do the work. I know where the hood release is. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin I purchased one of those little electronic analyzers and use it often. It lets me tell the mechanic what is wrong so he/she may think I'm car smart. 😉

We use a contractor for all of our repairs at our home and thankfully have a reliable shop to service our cars.

I still tinker a little Roy Kelley but it usually ends up being a professional that fixes the problem.

We have mentioned in the past that we wish cars still had manual parts - so you could change your own spark plugs and wouldn't need a computer to tell you what's wrong!

Amen Kat Palmiotti . To me the best computer notice my car gives me is which tire needs air. 😊

Well, if they think the B52 is big, they will be astonished by the rockets that SpaceX has built, haha.

Bob "RealMan" Timm  my take of working on a car has been pull in a gas station add gas and if it is more than that needed see my trusted mechanic... and it has been good for me for the past fifty some years, Endre

Well you know I love to tinker Endre Barath, Jr. , it's a form of relaxation for me. The problem now is there is so little to tinker with that I understand. If I don't understand it it could hurt me.

Thanks Berni Kerr . I've said many times that if I could make a living at fixing things I would love it but like you said we now live in a disposable world. I've even been known to fix things that came from The Dollar Tree,

Dear Bob,

Could not say, I have rebuilt a carburetor recently either. So no Missouri corners or rain screens for your energy-efficient dog house, eh?
