Motivational Monday…Perfection

Did you ever not try something, such as a sport, because you wanted to be perfect at it right away?

When I was younger, I remember hesitating before trying a new sport or game. My biggest issue was not that I thought I couldn’t do it…it was that I wanted to go from 0 to 100 immediately.

We all know that is not the case when any of us try something new…Pickleball, for example! Or mastering prompts in AI generators.  Very few master something as soon as they try it.

It takes time, practice, patience, and perseverance. The Olympics is the epitome of this. Of course, it helps to have good physical traits however, the Olympians we’ve been watching have worked hard from the moment they decided this was their goal.

What is it you’ve wanted to try but have hesitated because you wanted to be perfect out of the gate????

From my favorite NCIS…a “Gibbs-ism” to McGee…
    It’s about progress not perfection.

You just need to find your rhythm.

Perfection is the enemy of progress.

 Winston Churchill

Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.
Vince Lombardi

Good morning Kathy,

Perfection is so hard to attain as we are humans and are going to always make mistakes, which we learn and grow from. Love the quotes today!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX exactly...making mistakes is how we learn. No one is perfect.

Kathy, While striving for perfection can drive us to improve, it's often the imperfections that make us unique and authentic!

Hi Kathy,
As I age, I find myself deciding I don't want to spend the time getting good at something because I have other things I want to do with my time. Like painting. I've often thought I'd like to learn to paint. I even took a painting class. I decided I'm not willing to spend the time to get good at it, so I just admire the work of others.

Carol Williams I guess each of us has that one something they want to learn or do and that we're willing to continue to strive for it. I would love to be able to paint (and sing) but I know that's not going to happen.

Oh yes, singing is the other thing I'd love to be able to do, Kathy Streib. Like you, I know that's not going to happen so I focus on other things.

Good Morning Kathy Streib I would love to have known Vince Lombardi.  He has been gone for almost 54 years and yet so many of his quotes are still perfect for today!  Thank you for sharing.  Stay cool in TX! I have always liked this quote of his:

“The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have.”

Mike McCann Nebraska Land Broker me too,  You can always count on one of his quotes to make you open your eyes. I think coaches have some of the most inspirational quotes.

I have one son who always watched his brothers playing xbox, as he did not want to play till he knew what was around every corner and what to expect and to be great. I tend to dive straight in, seeking improvement as I go. Adjusting the sails, altering course and sometimes adjusting the goals as I move along.

Good afternoon Kathy. I believe the following was credited to Zig Ziglar: "you don't have to be perfect to start. But you have to start to bee perfect." ! That said, many wait until it is indeed too late. Enjoy your day.

Kathy, sure miss Gibbs and his dry humor!   I wanted to be a Olympic gymnist growing up, but even though I spent many hours TRYING to perfect my skills, I just didn't have what it took, and finally realized it.

Hi Kathy - Happy Monday. I've never had the need to be 'perfect' right out of the gate. I learned at a very young age that it takes practice to master a new sport, class etc.  And that's the part I loved (still do) making things happen and seeing it all come together. There is a certain energy and enthusiasm to that whole practice and that's what I enjoy.  For many years I taught leadership courses and there was always that 'one group' that 'had' that need to be perfect.  Helping  them through that to see other ways of arriving at their goal was a lot of fun.  Most got 'it.  Some just never could and they at times were afraid to even get started and/or they'd get started but quit before the good juice flowed.

Anna "Banana" Kruchten it's tough when you want to be perfect as soon as you start, trust me...I know. But I've been working on it.

Kathy I don't know how it's possible to be perfect at sometime one just began. I suppose that could happen but the odds are slim.  There's always a learning curve, or so it seems to me.

OMG I left a big long comment here and poof it got lost! Start over.......it's all good!  So the gist of what I said was, I never had the need to be perfect at anything whether it was a new sport or subject etc.  I enjoyed the 'process' of learning something new - it gave an exhilarating glow and energy to what I was trying to accomplish.  Same goes for me today! I enjoy discovering new things and making things happen!

I need to meditate on that "Perfection is Stagnation" quote.  I do know, that when I study Spanish on DuoLingo, I tend to stay in one section longer, until I get it perfect. DuoLingo often tells me, it's not about perfection, it's about progress.

Kathy if I waited to play golf until I taught I would be perfect at it, I would have quit right after the first time I swung a club .........  LOL

Kathy Streib  I have never been a perfectionist or tried to be one.... so I can resonate with Winston Churchill as well as with Vince Lombardy who I had the pleasure of meeting when I was in High School... now Diane is more of a perfectionist and I will just leave it at that, Endre
