Addressing Negativity in The Rain - ActiveRain, That Is

In any community, diverse opinions and perspectives are what make the exchange of ideas vibrant and enriching. ActiveRain is no different. However, just as in any large group, there are bound to be moments of friction and disagreement.

Recently, we've seen a couple of members behaving like the proverbial "little boy who took the game ball and went home" when faced with differing opinions, particularly around the topic of AI. These members, vehemently opposed to AI, are not just voicing their disagreement but, they are attempting to undermine others' enjoyment and productive discussions. Their comments often cross the line into bullying territory, disguised under a veneer of "respectful" dialogue but riddled with back-stabbing remarks.

It's important to remember that constructive debate and respectful disagreement are healthy. They challenge our assumptions, broaden our horizons and lead to growth. But, when disagreements turn into rude comments and personal attacks, it sours the entire community.

So, what can we do to maintain a positive and supportive environment on ActiveRain?

  1. Identify Bullying: Recognize when comments are not just disagreements but are attempts to bully or belittle others. These often come in the form of passive-aggressive remarks or thinly veiled insults.

  2. Stand Up for Others: If you see someone being unfairly targeted, offer your support. A kind word or a constructive counter-comment can go a long way in diffusing negativity.

  3. Stay Positive: Focus on contributing positively to the conversation. Highlight the benefits, share success stories, and provide constructive feedback. Remember what your grandmother taught you - "If you don't have anything nice to day, don't say anything at all."

  4. Ignore Negativity: Don’t let negative comments derail your participation. Stay focused on your goals and continue engaging with like-minded members who value respectful discussions.

  5. Report Inappropriate Behavior: If you encounter bullying or personal attacks, press the report button. This helps maintain the integrity of the community and ensures a welcoming space for everyone. Someone pressing the report button is what brought about this post!

By fostering a culture of respect and positivity, we can ensure that ActiveRain remains a valuable resource for ALL of our members. Let’s not let a few detractors ruin the fun and productive exchange of ideas for all. Aren’t we all here to learn, grow and support one another in our real estate journeys.

Let's keep the ball rolling in the Rain, together!

Hello Debe Maxwell, CRS  excellent presentation on addressing negativity on the Rain. ActiveRain community consist of honest excellent real estate professionals, there are a few enjoy making negative unprofessional comments to gain some attention.  AI is the future and will be around forever. Have a great week!

I've gotten a lot of complaints about these rude comments and many of them include the word, 'bully.' This is SO not how AR's founders meant for the members of this platform to behave.

Differences of opinion are welcomed here; bullying is NOT!

You're so right - AI is the future and there are some folks who are going to be working their fingers to the bones trying to catch up with the rest of us. I feel like I was a late-adapter and already feel behind, John Pusa!!

I agree, Debe Maxwell, CRS  bullying is not appropriate in ActiveRain community.

There’s something to be said about complaining just to complain, but there’s also something about finding solutions. :)

Making comments just to be cantankerous is such a waste of everyone's time, isn't it, Laura Cerrano?! I'd rather find solutions - and the solution for this would be - just move along if they have nothing nice to say! LOL

It's amazing how adults can behave so much like children when given a keyboard, isn't it, Buzz Mackintosh! I'm all about folks having diverse opinions but, the bullying is really unnecessary.

Hmm, like Mike McCann Nebraska Land Broker I guess I missed out on what was going on and I really like the self-assessment for comments that Liz and Bill Spear spoke about.  I think that Michael Jacobs was touching on the subject, but I didn't realize he was referring to something recent, haha.  Sometimes I prefer to be in the dark, especially when it comes to politics.  I hope that if I ever say anything that offends someone else, they will reach out to me and let me know about it.  I will gladly own anything I have done and I realize that my sense of humor is often mistaken and could lead to others being offended by it.

Brian England - while I haven't known you for a lifetime, I have become acquainted with you over our AR membership and away from it.  But, as I have previously said, some things don't seem to be on your radar screen.  And that's okay and that's Brian as Brain (if only in his mind).  HaHa.  🧠💩🧠

Aug 09, 2024 05:57 AM
Michael Jacobs

Brian England - you are special and not in that way which could see me cancelled.  Your lack of radar awareness continues to make you YOU.  HaHa.

Aug 09, 2024 08:22 AM

I appreciate that you still like me Michael Jacobs even when things that should be on my radar are not, haha.  Also, it's perfectly fine for you to refer to me as 💩 when it is warranted, rather than 🧠, Candice A. Donofrio isn't afraid to do so and I love her for it, haha.

Hey, if you are saying that I rode the short bus to school when I was a kid Michael Jacobs, I will have you know that was not the case, haha.  Shall we begin to make arrangements for lunch in October or is it too early to get something solid on the calendar?

Aug 09, 2024 08:24 AM
Michael Jacobs

Brian England - we obviously need to address continuing education the next time we meet.  I remember you discussed a Fall trip the last time we met.   Is CA on the agenda for October?

Of course, no disrespect to your multiple degrees - I know you show signs of intelligence or at least some indications of being a smart @$$ (which I can identify because I am also a charter member).

I also understand Mr Musk is expanding his fleet of vehicles.  Could buses, short and in other sizes, be among the options?  HaHa.

Aug 09, 2024 10:17 AM
Brian England

Yes, I will be in Oceanside October 13-20, you can have first dibs on which day that week works best for you for lunch.  I have always said that I would rather be called a smart @$$ than a dumb @$$, haha.  Hmm, I haven't heard anything about a bus from Mr. Musk, but there have been some rumblings about a van Michael Jacobs

Brian England - it seems you are more up to date with Elon, maybe I misheard the news that drives his brain and meanderings.

Great post Debe Maxwell, CRS, sad though that people need such a reminder every now and then but likely those who *really* need it just sail right on by.

Been here long enough to see many negative people come and (thankfully) go.  On occasion have interjected with a "what the Hell" is wrong with you comment to someone posting a totally UNneccessary negative comment or attack.

This site is overall a very sharing and supportive Community, if you easily get your panties in a bunch or just like to kick sand, please, please please just take your  rotten venomous attitude someplace else.

Sadly, you're right, Greg Large! Those who need to read this are not likely members that I follow (or no longer follow), nor do they follow me. I applaud you for making the retorts that you do to those who make unnecessary negative comments.

As for your last paragraph - you've described exactly how I feel - you're just far more succinct than I!!

Well this post generated a lot of comments. I understand people's fear of AI, none of us like change, it would be great if we could all just write with parchment and quill pens, but those days passed. I don't want to be left behind and try to keep up with new technology so learning about something, even if I do not think I will use it much prepares me for when I might need to use it. Life long learning is always good and there is so much to learn.

LOVE the parchment and quill pen comment, Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543! I'm with you on being a lifelong learner. I think that's why we've all kept up with those Zoom calls and are here as well. It's all about staying up with what is happening in our fields, even if we are not fond of it! I akin it to Twitter; I didn't like it but, learned it for future use if/when we need it!

I love your approach, Peter Mohylsky, Beach Broker! And, I'm with you - different opinions/personalities are what makes the world go 'round. One (or two) don't have to bully others into agreeing with their opinions.

And, you've never hurt feelings with your comments here in the Rain - at least no one has ever complained to me that you have! LOL

Unyielding in their opposition to AI, these individuals do more than express disagreement – their criticisms veer into bullying territory, camouflaged by a facade of politeness but laden with hurtful jabs.

It's like dealing with "narcissistic" personalities here on activerain. Thankfully, we have the power to hit "delete" and "unfollow" to protect ourselves from those who refuse to play fair.

Thank you for this post, Debe!

Aug 09, 2024 10:04 AM
Debe Maxwell, CRS

Hi Aura Alex! One, in particular, has been 'seen' by the masses as a bully and those hurtful jabs are, not only what the blog writer is seeing but, the masses are seeing them. Narcissistic is a great term for them - and unfollowing them is what many are doing. I'm also hearing from some that they are 'keeping their enemies closer.'

Aug 10, 2024 05:59 AM
Aura Alex

Debe Maxwell, CRS

Hmmm...while I admire those who can 'keep their enemies closer' I must think hard about this one!

Insecure narcissists mask their self-doubt with boastful behavior, convinced that they alone possess superior qualities while dismissing others as foolish.

Funny but, I haven't wrapped my head around that one either, Aura Alex. Focusing elsewhere seems to work well for me.

Hi Debe,
Bullying is NEVER ok. Why can't people just scroll on by if they disagree?  If I disagree with someone's post, I would never hijack their post with a negative comment. An opinion can be expressed with kindness but never as an insult, which I've seen happen.

Aug 09, 2024 05:14 PM

You know I agree with you 100%. I believe your rational suggestion quite possibly goes against their grain! Like you, if I don't agree, most of the time, I move on. Otherwise, I 'respectfully disagree' but, in a nice way. It just makes no sense to be a bully, Carol Williams! I'm sorry you've been a victim of this too. How anyone can be rude to you is beyond me!

Debe Maxwell, CRS  - I read your post several times and each time I read it, I felt sick to my stomach. Not because of what you wrote, but because I was one of the victims continuously humiliated by someone who continuously reminds me, they don’t like it and won’t use A.I. Building walls against people like me who enjoy creativity, is not the AR way.

The comments I received were like a kick the shins. I felt deeply disrespected. Just because the person making comments didn’t like my use of AI, there is no reason to throw me or anyone else under the bus, calling us sheep. However, if that is the only analogy that person can use, all I have to say is, I’d rather be a sheep than an ass.

Up until now, I have enjoyed my journey on AR. No other Broker, Board, or Association gave me the opportunity to learn so much from so many wonderful people in this industry. However, if the bear doesn’t stop poking, and if this negativity revolving around A.I. doesn’t end, perhaps the masterminds behind the scenes will have to consider what’s best: Tear down or Preserve the good name of ActiveRain? I hope an amicable solution can be found because being criticized, misunderstood, and disgraced is not the journey I want to continue.

Aug 09, 2024 05:34 PM
Debe Maxwell, CRS

I thank you so much for your comment and for reaching out. I am confident that there will be an amicable resolution. There's really no place on this platform for bully behavior.

Well clearly I've missed the sh*t show going on - almost.  I do know a few folks that are deeply against the use of AI and a few have made that clear.  Over the weekend in BananaTudes I featured 2 posts on purpose with opposite thoughts 1) fully embraced AI and I loved what she had created and 2) a well written post of the negatives of  AI along with a few links to some legislation.  I featured both to give folks a chance to speak their mind - RESPECTFULLY.   "To each their own" - is my response to them.  We're not all going to agree on everything nor have we ever here in AR. But I do expect people to be respectful!  Cause that's what our grandmothers taught us! And I respected my Grandmother Anna!

Aug 12, 2024 11:41 AM
Debe Maxwell, CRS

Hi Anna "Banana" Kruchten! Yes, it was a sh*t show and numerous people got their feelings hurt either by rude, condescending remarks or by outright lies about AI! Those comments were certainly not made by anyone who had ever heard what Grandmother Anna or my MawMaws said about moving on!

During the Zoom call on Tuesday, someone had printed all of those links out and read every one of them, word-for-word. Not a single line applied to how AR members are utilizing AI.

It's sad to be so short-sighted, one doesn't even realize that if they have a smartphone, AI is running behind the scenes!

SO good to see you on the call on Tuesday - it's always great seeing you! 😘
