August 2024 Is Clear The Shelters Month In Charlotte (September, Too)!

Good morning, Roy... as you know I'm a big supporter of shelter adoptions... and I always highlight these events in the hopes of generating at least a couple of adoptions.

Michael Jacobs these days, Michael, the only unintended consequences I think about are those that will come as a result of the NAR lawsuits.

Nina Hollander, Broker - I can understand why the pandemic prompted some to adopt some furry companions.  It's a long-term commitment.  And that's where my mind wandered to while reading your post.  It's an ongoing issue even as the pandemic is over (for most people).  

Michael Jacobs that is something I just can't understand... my pets are like my children. There is no way I can give them up. My husband is convinced I'd give him up first.

Nina Hollander, Broker - your reply reminds me of a familiar comic strip where we see a discussion between two people discussing pets.  One says, I don't like pets.  The next scene/panel shows two subjects - a person and the pet.  The non-pet fan human is missing.  It still cracks me up even though I have seen it countless times.

Mike McCann Nebraska Land Broker good morning, Mike... I adopted a dog many years ago that subsequently lived with me for 15 years that had come out of an abusive home and had been adopted twice and was returned twice. Gracie needed patience and was just the sweetest and smartest dog I'd ever had. I suspect more dogs and cats are returned than we realize. Many were returned after the pandemic... people who were at home went crazy adopting and then when the pandemic was over, they returned those pets. I could have strangled each and every one of those people.

Mike McCann Nebraska Land Broker hi Mike... by now after all these years, I think lots of people in the Rain remember my writing about my Oliver, my Max, my Gracie... all of whom have crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Now I mostly write about my Mr. Marlow and my Bingo.

Nina, our shelter gives senior discounts too, which is very nice.

Joan Cox that's a bummer, Joan. Charlotte's Humane Society is very good in helping support these kinds of initiatives. They also do a senior citizen discount.

Joan Cox it is nice, Joan. We got a discount when we adopted our Bingo. But not all shelters discount for seniors (they should).

Bill Salvatore - East Valley hi Bill... late spring, summer are when the shelters are usually the most full and desperate for adoptions. Wishing you a lovely weekend, as well!

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 hi Sheila... when I pop over to the shelter and see some of those dogs and cats in there a long time, I cry driving home. I'd take them all home with me if I could.

Norma J. Elkins hi Norma... so good to see you! Hope all is well at your end. Our Humane Society and Animal Control Department have been doing amazing work getting dog and cats adopted and fostered. But they keep coming in as fast as they are going out.

Kathy Streib hi Kathy... so much need out there... adoptions, fostering, food, supplies, etc. Our Humane Society delivers pet food to seniors who can't afford to buy it so that they can keep their pets in their homes.

Lew Corcoran hi Lew... although I highlight Clear The Shelters for Charlotte, it is a national initiative. So people like yourself can help out from where ever they might be.

Patricia Feager, ABR,CRS,GRI,MRP good morning, Patricia... what many people don't realize is that most of the people who work in the shelters are volunteers... they clean cages, they exercise dogs, they groom dogs and cats... for the love of the animal and not for the pay.

Nina Hollander, Broker - You're right! Most people expect clean shelters but don't now how hard volunteers work.

I knew it because my daughter volunteered her time to clean up the zoo in Zurich while she was waiting to get hired after she moved to Switzerland. And my sister volunteered her time cleaning the pet store in exchange for something she could give to her six children. Because of her labor of love her children always had a puppy or a kitten or a fish, or hermit crab, a cage, and/or food for pets. 

Patricia Feager, ABR,CRS,GRI,MRP people's abuse of animals is heartbreaking... people who give of their time to help abandoned and abused animals are truly heroes.

Endre Barath, Jr. good morning, Endre... pet shelters are one of my pet causes (no pun intended). We are on the same page in that our pets are family.

Brian England good morning, Brian... the sad thing is that the shelters do get cleared out during events like this, but they refill almost as quickly. It's heartbreaking.

Bob "RealMan" Timm good morning, Bob. I find that really short-sighted. Adoptions do go up when the humane societies make them more affordable for people.

Debbie Laity our CMPD Animal Control has been doing an amazing job of adopting out and fostering out hundreds of animals each week. Sadly, those that leave the shelter seem to be replaced in a NY minute.
