August 2024 Is Clear The Shelters Month In Charlotte (September, Too)!

AUGUST 2024 IS CLEAR THE SHELTERS™ MONTH IN CHARLOTTE (AND SEPTEMBER, TOO)

Clear The Shelters™ Month is observing its 10th anniversary in 2024 and in honor of this milestone, the Clear The Shelters™ Month fund raising and adoption initiative has been extended through September 30th. You can help to clear Charlotte's pet shelters and save a life this month and, for that matter, any month.

Clear Charlotte Shelters: Adopt A PetAugust 2024 is Clear The Shelters™ Month sponsored by NBC Universal Local, in cities around the country. Clear the Shelters™ is a nationwide pet adoption initiative whose purpose is to find fur-ever homes for homeless pets. Since 2015, the Clear The Shelters™ adoption campaigns have helped more than 1 million pets find new loving homes.

Animal shelters typically become overcrowded in the summer months because of spring litters. This month, help find fur-ever homes for Charlotte's homeless pet population. Many shelters have agreed to waive or reduce adoption fees on Clear The Shelters Month. All pets available for adoption have been spayed or neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated.

The Humane Society of Charlotte has joined this effort to help as many animals as possible find their fur-ever homes. During Clear The Shelters™ month, Humane Society of Charlotte is offering the following incentives:

$50 off adoption fees for select adult dogs

BOGO $50 off adoption fees for kittens

Fee-waived adoptions for adult cats

The Greater Charlotte SPCA does not own or operate a shelter facility. Volunteers foster all animals in their homes until they are adopted.

Save A Life By Adopting A Shelter Pet

Did you know that homeless animals outnumber homeless people 5 to 1? Roughly, 70 million cats are homeless in the United States. Only 10% of dogs born will find a permanent home. Around 3.9 million dogs are abandoned or given up to shelters each year. In 2023, the Clear The Shelters™ initiative set a new record with 1 million pet adoptions since 2015, with 157,000 pets adopted in 2023.  Why not help increase the number in 2024? Please adopt! Don't shop!

Dopt don't shop for your pets

Not in a position to adopt a pet, but want to contribute? Make a donation on the donation page of your favorite local shelter. In 2023, alone more than $575,000 was donated to participating animal shelters and rescues during the adoption event. Donations can also be made on the Clear The Shelters™ website.

Good morning, Roy... as you know I'm a big supporter of shelter adoptions... and I always highlight these events in the hopes of generating at least a couple of adoptions.

Hello Nina - once again, consequences - intended and otherwise, can't escape my thoughts.  I continue to see signs of hope.   May that kind of thinking flourish.

Michael Jacobs these days, Michael, the only unintended consequences I think about are those that will come as a result of the NAR lawsuits.

Nina Hollander, Broker - I can understand why the pandemic prompted some to adopt some furry companions.  It's a long-term commitment.  And that's where my mind wandered to while reading your post.  It's an ongoing issue even as the pandemic is over (for most people).

Michael Jacobs that is something I just can't understand... my pets are like my children. There is no way I can give them up. My husband is convinced I'd give him up first.

Nina Hollander, Broker - your reply reminds me of a familiar comic strip where we see a discussion between two people discussing pets.  One says, I don't like pets.  The next scene/panel shows two subjects - a person and the pet.  The non-pet fan human is missing.  It still cracks me up even though I have seen it countless times.

Thank you for sharing Nina Hollander, Broker   I wonder how many animals end back up at the shelters when folks realize they are not meant to be a pet owner.

Not everyone can be...and I am one of those since I am on the road so much.

Havea great weekend.

Mike McCann Nebraska Land Broker good morning, Mike... I adopted a dog many years ago that subsequently lived with me for 15 years that had come out of an abusive home and had been adopted twice and was returned twice. Gracie needed patience and was just the sweetest and smartest dog I'd ever had. I suspect more dogs and cats are returned than we realize. Many were returned after the pandemic... people who were at home went crazy adopting and then when the pandemic was over, they returned those pets. I could have strangled each and every one of those people.

Nina, our shelter gives senior discounts too, which is very nice.

Joan Cox that's a bummer, Joan. Charlotte's Humane Society is very good in helping support these kinds of initiatives. They also do a senior citizen discount.

Joan Cox it is nice, Joan. We got a discount when we adopted our Bingo. But not all shelters discount for seniors (they should).

Hi Nina Hollander, Broker - Clear the shelters day sounds like a lot of work for the people that work there! That's a job I wouldn't want but just thinking about it, hats off to those that can do this. Love of animals will make many volunteers! I do love animals, but cleaning up the shelters, disinfecting, making it prestine is not for me.

Animals are worth it!!!

Aug 09, 2024 06:48 PM
Nina Hollander, Broker

Patricia Feager, ABR,CRS,GRI,MRP good morning, Patricia... what many people don't realize is that most of the people who work in the shelters are volunteers... they clean cages, they exercise dogs, they groom dogs and cats... for the love of the animal and not for the pay.

Aug 10, 2024 04:43 AM
Patricia Feager, ABR,CRS,GRI,MRP

Nina Hollander, Broker - You're right! Most people expect clean shelters but don't now how hard volunteers work.

I knew it because my daughter volunteered her time to clean up the zoo in Zurich while she was waiting to get hired after she moved to Switzerland. And my sister volunteered her time cleaning the pet store in exchange for something she could give to her six children. Because of her labor of love her children always had a puppy or a kitten or a fish, or hermit crab, a cage, and/or food for pets.

Aug 10, 2024 07:32 AM
Nina Hollander, Broker

Patricia Feager, ABR,CRS,GRI,MRP people's abuse of animals is heartbreaking... people who give of their time to help abandoned and abused animals are truly heroes.

Again I am envious that your shelters actually seem more interested in finding homes for the pets then making of money off of them Nina Hollander, Broker . Even though the shelter is always full here they wouldn't offer a pennies discount.

Aug 11, 2024 06:55 PM

Bob "RealMan" Timm good morning, Bob. I find that really short-sighted. Adoptions do go up when the humane societies make them more affordable for people.

My inn is full. I would take more if I could. My pets are members of my family, too. I hope this event sees a lot of animals get a furever home. I mean...furever...not just when it suits the new owner.

Debbie Laity our CMPD Animal Control has been doing an amazing job of adopting out and fostering out hundreds of animals each week. Sadly, those that leave the shelter seem to be replaced in a NY minute.
