Suggestions from Patricia Feager

I received this message from my friend Patricia Feager, ABR,CRS,GRI,MRP:

Roy, you have lived through many periods in history, that people like me never experienced. I would love if you shared some of your stories about growing up and how life was different in a world, where I did not exist. Also, it would be interesting to hear about some of your earliest recollections of getting into the real estate business and evolutions in the industry and how did they impact the way you had to learn new skills. A series like that would really be refreshing and so interesting, in my opinion.

I wonder if others would be interested in these kinds of posts. I responded with the comment that I might need for her to ask specific questions. If others are interested, I would love to hear your questions.

I am probably the oldest active member of ActiveRain. Most of the members were not yet born when I received my real estate broker license in October, 1960 while in my third year of law school at the University of Virginia. I opened my first real estate and insurance office in the summer of 1961, after finishing law school.

Hi Roy. What a fun idea for a blog series. Yes, I'd be interested--I have a good friend who was a Chicagoland Realtor in the '80's, and have loved her stories.

My question to get you rolling would be: What are some of the biggest changes for the positive you've seen in your real estate tenure? (Part of me is wanting to find the silver lining in all this Sitzer crud that we're all wading through right now--a paperwork changer, anyway!)

Thanks in advance for your insights.

Thank you Roy Kelley. In "A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens," it has been written, It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

If I were sitting down with you for an interview, I would ask you how you would respond in reference to the best and worst times to any period in your history?

With gratitude, from your forever friend,

Patricia

What a wonderful note from Patricia, and yes I'd be interested.

How about "When you first opened your real estate office in 1961, what was a typical day like? What was the interaction with clients like?"

I was alive in October 1960 but being only a month old wouldn't have known anything about the world!

Kat Palmiotti - I like that question! Roy Kelley - Tell me more! This is something I'd also love to read!!!

Hi Roy, I think this will make an interesting series of posts. I have heard about how homes were sold before I got my license in real estate, about the printed books and how people went to the office to look for the newest listings of the day. There were inefficiencies that brought some good things with them, too.

Good morning Roy Kelley ..I love this post and so glad it was featured in Kathy Streib Sunday series! I think Patricia Feager, ABR,CRS,GRI,MRP would be a wonderful person to interview you and love the question she would ask "I would ask you how you would respond in reference to the best and worst times to any period in your history?

I have experienced many 'best' times but avoid talking about the 'worst' times. As you know, there are many challenges to overcome in the real estate industry.

My career before real estate was as a retail banker. In those days, we made real estate loans among other things. I remember a client bringing in a one-page, 8 1/2 by 11 inch paper that was the complete real estate purchase contract.

Yes. Much has changes.

Hello Roy Kelley  It would be of great interest to many people for you to tell us what it was like selling real estate in 1960!  A day in the life of Roy Kelley! Things have changed so much since then. Listing a home, selling a home. Marketing. ?

We take so much for granted these days. Computers, phones, social media make everything so fast and convenient.  When I started selling real estate we had 3 page contracts with carbon copies, fax machines and phones on cords!

You mean a lot to the people in Active Rain, it will be a real pleasure to hear your stories!

Good Morning Roy Kelley

1. When you decided to end your career with REMAX how did go about it?

2. How affordable were homes in the 1960s, 1970s, or 1980s?

3. In the early years of real estate, what were people buying? New Construction? Pre-existing homes? Rehabs for investment?

4. How did you build wealth in Real Estate?

Patricia is always full of great ideas and I think this is one of her best. A series like this would be so educational especially with the challenges going on now with the changes to real estate. Your series would be a reminder that things have always changed, and agents have overcome the challenges and moved on helping clients and customers achieve their dreams and goals.

Hi Roy:

I think Patricia's suggestion is wonderful and hope you will take it on.

I'd be curious about what the major challenges were with real estate when you first opened your office as compared to now, or perhaps when you retired. Are the major issues similar or have they changed over the years?

Jeff

Roy Kelley  did you ever sell a Sears catalog home?

Debra Leisek

I do not recall a specific sale of a Sears home. It is likely that some were sold by my many agents.

It is just so interesting to think about people buying homes from a sears catalog way back when. Now Amazon has homes they deliver in a kit package. Kind of like full circle!

Thank you Roy Kelley

Wow!  What a great opportunity for us here in the rain.  I'd love to ask questions!

I was a year old in 1960 so definitely wasn't in business yet.  In my 50 years of working, I would say that maybe business people were more professional than they are now.  Is that accurate?  Courteous?  Not in as much of a hurry?

Because technology didn't exist as it does today, it took more time to conduct business in general.  Does that sound accurate?
