Friday Fun Foto...Tasty Garden Goodness

By

You gotta love it when the tomato slice covers the entire piece of bread. This is a slab of Beefsteak tomato that I grew. I shot this picture before I added the bacon. With the abundance of fresh tomatoes coming from my garden, BLTs are often the house special of the day.

I should also add that I bought a locally raised pig that was locally processed, and I have a lot of thick cut bacon in my freezer. Between my fresh tomatoes and the local bacon, I'm in hog heaven. Yeah...you all knew that last line was coming.

This post was inspired by a post from Kathy Streib. In her post Kathy talks about the dilemma of choosing between a hot dog and a burger. You can read the post here. I don't have that dilemma at this time (although I would choose both the dog and the burger), but Kathy's post inspired me to share yesterday's lunch with all of you.

I've lived on Colorado's Western Slope for over 31 years. I love this area and all it has to offer, and I enjoy sharing what I know about my home. As a REALTOR®, I also love to share my expertise in this area as well. If you need any real estate information for Montrose County, or Delta County, Colorado...please give me a call.

Beef Steak tomatoes can grow really large.  I once had one that measured 5 1/2 inches across.

Myrl Jeffcoat I had a friend that was so competitive when it came to gardening. I weighed one of my Beef Steak tomatoes and it was over a pound. I beat her on that particular day.

Hi Debbie- Had there been your BLT at our function this weekend...it really would have been a dilemma!!! I've never had a slice of tomato that would cover the whole slice of bread.   We already have our dinner planned however, I have a feeling I'll sneak in a BLT this weekend. Thank you for the mention.

Debbie Laity - there is no finer taste to me in summer than a home grown tomato! BLT is the perfect way to eat light, healthy, and enjoy the experience without a hot kitchen.

You were wise to buy that locally raised pig for bacon! Smart!!!

I find your posts are always so interesting!!!

Patricia Feager, ABR,CRS,GRI,MRP Thank you so much for your kind words. I love reading your posts, too. I'm talking with my office peeps about splitting an entire pig this fall.

Debbie Laity - I think your office peeps would jump at the opportunity!

When I was married, my husband decided to buy a half a cow and said we could ask my parents, siblings, and brother-in-laws if they wanted to go in on it.

Jerry, my spouse knew an Italian Butcher who had the best meat. For years, we split the 1/2 cow with family members and over the course of time, we saved a lot of money. You really don't realize how much you spend on meat week-to-week or as frequently as needed. In the long run, it really is cheaper when you have a deep freezer and it's full of meat.

Growing your tomatoes must be great, I could tell you a story about my father trying to grow tomatoes in the late 1960's in Bridgeport CT, he was a failure the short answer, with all the stuff he bought and the two or three tomatoes he ended up with was quite expensive.... would have been cheaper to buy it in the store..... Seriously that tomato you grew looks awesome:)Endre

Hello Debbie - a BLT sandwich can be tasty.  And one combined with a slice of avocado can be tastier at times.

Thanks for sharing these treasures found from your garden.  Looks and sounds delicious.  Talk about a sensory experience!

Kathy Schowe I can't get enough tomatoes at this time of year. The anticipation keeps building starting around January. In CO we have a short growing season. We have an elevation of 6100 feet. The earliest I get my garden planted is about the third week of May. I have to wait a long time to get those big beefsteak maters. Right now, I'm harvesting almost one big one a day. I have over 10 tomato plants so there's always something ripening, but those really big ones are my favorites.

Dear Debbie,

That is one big tomato! My biggest one this summer was the size of a large grape. Very delicious too, so I saved a few of seeds. Maybe the weather will not be quite as hot & dry next year.

Dorte Engel  I hope you keep growing your own tomatoes. I find it very rewarding and tasty, too.

It has been a long time since I have had a garden from which to harvest food. Yet, I do eat the occasional BLT and love them.

Debbie, who doesn't love a fresh beefsteak tomato? I get our rye bread from Whole Foods and that is the same source for my tomatoes. Great photo, makes me hungry!!
