Victorian Puzzle Purses: My latest crafty obsession
I recently saw a video on Instagram of a woman unfolding this beautifully decorated paper square, and with each turn another decoration or message was revealed. I was fascinated and followed down the rabbit hole finding other videos and instructions on how to craft one of these treasures.
I found that the first example of puzzle purses dated all the way back to the 1700's. These paper puzzlers were most often used to send personal messages for to your sweetheart on Valentine's Day. On each folded section, the sender would write a message that the receiver could then read by opening the puzzle fold by fold.
I have seen examples with scripture and poems, many decorated with hearts and love birds. I had to give this a try! I found a pad of drawing paper, medium weight and with my paper cutter, began cutting out squares. The folds are fairly easy to master and it's thrilling to have it come out as a neat little package. To decorate, I started with magic markers, but then purchased some nice brush ink markers and a few fine tip pens. Then I started decorating!
I let my imagination run wild and called on my talavera tiles for inspiration. I decorated a few with the recipient in mind- one with and Irish/shamrock theme for my friend Kelly, and a fishy puzzle for my friend Dennis. A birthday wish or a friendship message, or a love poem for my husband.
They are fun to make and even more special to give. Hopefully, if you receive one from me.. you will know it was made with love! ❤️
