Above Photo is during the final round which is a winner take all of vehicles still able to run at the St Libory (NE) Watermelon Days Demo Derby. These guys were out for blood!!!
Hi All,
What a crazy last 36 hours. And what a fun post to write for my 900th blog on AR!
Demo Derby sponsor up in my old stomping grounds and seeing some friends we haven't seen in years...plus
a fantastic chat with a young friend, Aiden Lukasiewicz, who beat cancer 10 years ago thanks to St. Judes Hospital and so much local fund raising.
He runs cross country for the local high school now!!
You can read about his journey at this link: https://nebraska.tv/news/local/aiden-lukasiewiczs-st-jude-journey I have his autograph on
my office wall from over 10 years ago when we were doing a fundraiser.
Whew...I am tired typing this! But on we go!
Then today was our son's 34th Birthday...plus our son's close friend and wife are our overnight tonight guests with their gorgeous little daughter, Willow.
And our daughter made it back from Florida.
Whew...only thing that did not get done was the yard mowed because of a surprise half inch rain this morning plus our company!
The Derby was at times a blast...at times the action was exciting and furious but at times it would drag on as they were raising money and doing "calcutta auctions" between each of the early heats which takes a lot of time but raises a lot of money.
A lot of beat-up vehicles and no injuries...although one Dad in the pits had to take an ambulance ride due to chest pains. No word on his condition.
Robyn got to go to church with her old roommate before the Derby and then got to chat with many of our old friends she does not get to see very often.
I helped set up our banners and vehicles with my close friends Bob Helgoth and Darren Mamot. For a fee, you can get your flat bed trucks close to the action and people sit on the trucks on hay bales and lawn chairs.
Our son came from Lincoln to the event. Jake and Robyn took off for home about a half hour before me and when I got home (60 miles) we just sat around the kitchen counter and chatted. No alcohol for the evening...just good chatter all night.
Today, (Sunday), we had french toast, eggs, and bacon. Opened a few small gifts and mid-morning Jake's friends, Forrest and Melina, got here from work meetings in Kansas City.
They live about 100 miles west of us and have a 6am checkin Monday morning for their daughter to have a minor surgery on her ears. That hospital is about 2 miles from our house... SO his folks brought their daughter from home and it was our first chance to meet the grandparents.
Willow was born with a very rare disease or syndrome that less than 200 kids in the U.S. have. She adores our son and he adores her.
You can probably tell that from this photo!
Since the last time we saw her, Willow is running and is much more verbal....even though she has limited hearing. (She was only crawling a few months ago when we saw her)... so, yep the dining room chair laid sideways became the Baby-gate to the basement stairs and all the doors had to be shut!
We had steaks and sweet corn for supper...and Willow loved Robyn's chessy potatoes! (So did I!)
Plus some Kansas Dirt for dessert. (Crushed Oreos in a pudding type mixture.)
Melina was able to do a bit of shopping at Target as they do not have one in their neck of the woods. And Forrest loves baseball so we watched game on the tube!
All in all, a very fun weekend...and our guests were up early to get here from KC so have already hit the hay and will be gone by 5:30 in the morning...(I will still be asleep!)
If you had half the fun and action I did this weekend...you had a great weekend!
Until Next Time...You Do Not Have to Go Far to Have Fun...Just Have Fun!
Mike
Scroll Down for a couple more photos of the weekend!
Pay close attention to the sign above our Kitchen window in the following photo...that is how we have lived out lives for at least 34 years and 9 months and 2 weeks!! Jake was 2 weeks late! "Children are the Heart of our Home!" Mike
