If you enjoy what you do, you will never work a day in your life

This post is inspired by Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400 .  She had posted this blog It's recess, not homework  regarding the changes currently occurring in the Real Estate Industry, and a reminder of all we have been through in the past.

Is the Real Estate Industry changing?  Of course, it is ever changing.  The one constant I am told is necessary in life is change.  Imagine how boring life would be if everything constantly stayed the same.

How can we deal with these changes?  Or any of life's changes?  Do we dig a hole and crawl into it, or do we embrace the change, enjoy the process and learn to work through it?

For me, I learned my decision in 2008 when the housing market crashed.  I remember having 5 closings set up, and I prided myself on getting things closed unless of course the buyer changed their mind.  I would do everything in my power to get them the home they dreamed of.  Little did I know, I had no control over any of it!  One by one they fell apart.  Why?  Because of change.  The lenders were learning the changing process, things were changing constantly and buyers loans fell apart with no saving them.  It was a hard time, every closing I had fell apart except One!

I remember thinking, how am I going to pay my mortgage, pay the utilities and put food on the table for my kids?  I had just gone through a divorce a few months earlier and was really struggling financially.

The thoughts that rushed through my head.  What am I going to do?  Go back into the accounting field?  It wasn't going to be fair to any company I worked for because I was also traveling back and forth 4 hours to help a family member who was ill.  Not to mention the reduced salary.  How was I going to make it?

At that moment I decided, This is what I do.  I help Buyers and Sellers of Real Estate.  This is what I am good at, and This Is My Job.  I keep on working and hope for the best!

Here I am over 15 years later, still helping Buyers and Sellers of Real Estate and loving every moment.  I love what I do.  I love helping people and meeting new people.  The joy of this business by far outweighs the challenges.

I am still learning.  The one thing in this business is you are always learning.  I have had the pleasure of moving to a new area and getting to see all of the beauty here.  I have had the privilege of learning about coastal properties and now I am learning more about farm and ranch and acreage.  There is so much beauty all around us and what a joy to be able to get to see it on a daily basis!

Therefore, if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life!

Hang in there.  This too shall pass and we will make it through.  Is it going to be challenging?  Yes, but will it be boring?  No!  Embrace it, and keep moving forward.

Here's a cool short video I found, I hope it inspires you!

Hi Brenda... this latest change isn't something I'm not able to deal with. I've dealt with seismic changes in business and real estate since 1972. For me now, the question is whether I want to deal with the changes. I've given retirement considerable thought the past few years and always thought I'd wait until I hit 75. Well I hit 75 earlier this year and these changes might just take me over the top.

Hi Nina Hollander, Broker .  Number one I can't believe you are 75.  You look amazing and are doing so good.  You have been around for so long, I know your long time clients would hate to see you go.  I do understand though.  You have definitely paid your dues.  This business is kind of funny in the way it is hard to retire from.  The past 2 years was tough for me moving to a new area, but this year I truly embraced it and am so glad I did.  I just love the business too much to give it up.  I am so thankful for the clients God put into my life.  I am enjoying them!  Have a great day and thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment!

Brenda J. Andrew RENE, PSA, MRP, SRS hi Brenda... this is a hard business to retire from... no wonder I'm still working at the age of 75. But sometimes hard decisions have to be made... and while I love my clients and I am loving the business itself less and less. So I'm feeling like I'm working more and more.

It may be a good time to retire Nina Hollander, Broker .  I'd hate to see you go, but at some point you need to be able to help yourself and relax.  One of my friends in the business got sick a few years ago, and lived for 6 months.  She was such a great agent, very well respected and loved, but then she was gone.  It was so sad, I told myself I wasn't going to be like that, but then here I am.  The joy I have right now and blessing is that I have my mom and dad one street over from me.  I am so thankful for the time I am getting with them and seeing my siblings.  Working more and more isn't good for any of us.  I have started working more recently, and I know it will take a toll.  Anyway, whatever you decide, keep showing up in the rain.  I really enjoy your post even though I am not as active as I want to be.  It is a great community and I really enjoy it! You are well loved and respected here.

Brenda J. Andrew RENE, PSA, MRP, SRS you are so fortunate to have family close by. We have no family close by so retirement would give me time to visit with family both here and in Europe. I'll just take it as it goes... it's one of those things that when it's the right time you just know.

Good morning Brenda,

I love the positivity of your post! I'm in complete agreement with you! I've always felt so fortunate to love what I do, and most always feel I don't work a day in my life! Yes there are changes..there are always changes and this time next year we will feel things are more normal until they are not! Get out there, embrace change and move forward! It works for me!

Good morning Dorie Dillard Austin TX Thank you so much!  I think most of us must feel this way as far as loving the job.  I think those that don't, don't make it in the business.  I agree with you 100%, by this time next year things will feel more normal.  Our normals have changed a lot over the years, not just in real estate but in every aspect of our lives.  We just have to keep going!  Have a great day!

Brenda J. Andrew RENE, PSA, MRP, SRS - that's kind of you to say.  However, I think I might qualify for the wise @$$ category more often than not.  Although SoCal has its detractors for many reasons, I think our weather is typically pretty good.  Typically, being the operative word.

Hi Brenda- what a beautiful and uplifting post. Very few people are blessed with loving what they do for work. Nothing is perfect but the ups and downs in a field you love must be easier to accept than working in something you don't have your heart in.  I'd never heard the Penci tale and it is one I will share with my great-nephews.

Brenda J. Andrew RENE, PSA, MRP, SRS  my take is how you look at things, you can accept change or fight it... in this instance my advice is to accept it and deal with it. I have been working in this profession for 29 years and have seen changes.... I just focus on how to manage the changes.... I work with developers, flippers and the list goes on and on... today I casually asked are you familiar with the changes after the NAR settlement? The answer was Yes.... so with that said we need to... and he said yes sign a Buyer Broker Agreement, and he spelled out the three critical points how he wanted it filled out.... easy as it could be.... now if I had taken a different approach.... well that would have been drama...Endre

We are definitely having to deal with constant changes in the real estate industry and I think that latest changes are going to have a lot of repercussions in the next few years.

I am blessed to have had the parents and grandparents that I had - they were a huge influence on my life lessons.  A favorite saying that I often share as a public speaker is about my Dad: I only saw him work two days throughout his entire life; and, he quit both of those jobs.  He always got paid well playing with his passion.  The family joke was always that he would never retire.  We would someday likely find him slumped over his desk doing what he loved (geology).  Unfortunately, that is how we found him, well into his 80's.

Brenda, in real estate you do have to roll with all the changes, or make a decision!   Like Nina, thinking of retiring, but have clients I dearly love, and how can you say you won't help them?

I understand Joan Cox .  I thought of getting out of the business after we moved, but instead I decided to work on getting my Broker's license.  Now I have all of the classes and everything needed, I just need to schedule the test and take it.  Of course, now I'm super busy - but I need to take the time for myself.  Most people don't realize we are all in.  This business can take over your life if you allow it, but I still love it!  I think it was my 2nd time thinking of getting out, but then I realized this is what I do!  I hope you can hang in there - we would miss you!

Glad you are obtaining your broker license, it is all worth it!   I got mine in 2009, and never looked back.   I am 68, and have my financial stuff in order, but I would miss so many of my clients.   Many of them say "I love you" before hanging up.    Who can leave that???
