Who's Responsibility Is It?

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Ward County Notary Services 607851

Home owners have a lot of responsibilities, picking up after others shouldn't be one...BUT it is. If you are shopping for a home and you don't want to pick up litter then get familiar with the neighborhood before you buy.

The yard above is not mine and mine has never been that littered BUT I live across from a baseball field, a few yards from a busy street and a zoo as well as a City park. I get litter! Of all the litter I get the most annoying and prevalent is cigarettes butts.  Neither of my neighbors smoke and I rarely see anyone out front on the sidewalk yet every day I am able to pick up a few butts.

This is silly but I've often wondered if God was surprised when man first littered. A silly thought because God is all knowing. How appalling that first time must have been when He created a perfect world for man and then BOOM, there was litter.

It seems as common courtesy for some, as in pick up your own trash, does not exist in some areas.

Michael Elliott you have to wonder, did they learn to litter from their parents?

It's too bad people are so inconsiderate that they litter. I don't think I have ever littered, but I've certainly picked up plenty of it. I remember my Mom going out to pick up pop cans along the roadsides to turn in for money when we were kids.

I confess that I littered as a teen Carol Williams but that came to a halt when I worked at a motel and it was part of my job to clean up the grounds that were always littered.

Good morning, Bob... fortunately trash that's not mine is not something I've ever had to deal with. Your post reminded me of a client whose home I listed and which was flanked by two homes that did not do a great job of keeping their lawns mowed. So until we closed, she mowed her lawn and the two lawns on either side of her. To this day she laughs about what the new owners thought after they moved in and didn't see manicured lawns on either side of them.

I have heard of that scenario before Nina Hollander, Broker (my Love). I personally would not do it but evidently it helped your listing sell so my hats off to her.

Your comment reminded me of a listing I was getting ready to put on the market and the owners asked what they could do to increase the value of their property. I told them to help the neighbors clean up their yard or hire someone to do it.

Carol Williams in my experience, Carol, sellers would need to hire someone.

Good Morning Bob "RealMan" Timm

I like this cartoon and your narrative. One of the biggest issues these days is people using others trash barrels to drop their doggy poop bags into or just leaving the bags on the side of the road.

Aug 22, 2024 08:55 AM
Bob "RealMan" Timm

At least they are using poop bags Doug Dawes and not leaving dog piles in the yard but I agree with you, how hard is it to find a city trash can or take it home and use your own?

I am so disgusted with how inconsiderate people are, I grew up that you throw trash in the trash bucket, and it used to drive me crazy seeing people toss garbage from their cars and the list goes on and on.... so you can imagine how I feel living in Los Angeles now with all the homeless encampments all over the street and they are living in their filth...Endre

It makes no sense for people to litter, especially when there is a trash can nearby, which I have seen people litter instead of using, haha.

I see it all the time as well at our neighborhood park Brian England . Often within two feet of a trash can. At the zoo their parking lot is always littered with dirty diaper's.

Hello Bob.  I am with you regarding the cigarette butt's.  I hate the habit in and of itself but then to see the butts tossed randomly does upset.  I do try to make a habit of when walking into a store if there is trash on the lot I will pick of a piece or two and throw in the trash on my way in.  Our office area parking I am very diligent of.  The landlord keeps such a nice building for us I want to give what help I can.  It turns out that in either case if it takes an extra 15 or 30 seconds I would be surprised.  m

Yup. It's been a while since I've seen it but it's particularly disturbing when someone empties out a whole ashtray onto the parking lot or street.

I go out for a walk every day. I have several routes I walk. It is amazing how much litter I see in so many yards! Just pick it up, homeowner. Even if some unknown slacker left it in your yard. It is your yard. Keep it looking nice!

And, yes, it is super annoying that someone would just toss trash into your yard.

The worst for us is after the State Fair Parade which travels a half block from out house John Juarez . Candy wrappers and literature are all over the place for a couple of days after the parade.

Condo living in the city means that buildings have a porter to clean up the sidewalk and common areas of the building. My neighborhood is trialing an experiment with having city provided trash bins with daily trash pickup (to minimize rats) - and I have to say the experiment is working with cleaner sidewalks, less rats, and more room on the sidewalks to get around. An added plus is that we aren't receiving fines from the city anymore for random garbage on the sidewalk- which could include something as simple as a plastic bag that's been floating in the wind and lands a moment before the sanitation team arrives at the property- which I have personally witnessed a $100 fine being issued for such nonsense.

WOW Adam Feinberg that fine situation hardly seems fair. I can imagine someone with a vendetta taking advantage of that.
