While You Were Out. . .

While You Were Out

And Rules of Engagement.  Well, Kinda. . .

Admittedly, I have been around for a while.  I remember the days before voicemail.  Even before answering machines. Kids, look up their existence and their popularity.  And before that the paper or even direct personal notifications received from someone who stayed behind when you left for an appointment.  Yes, times are constantly changing.

The first rule of any technology

used in a business is that automation applied to an efficient operation

will magnify the efficiency.

The second is that automation

applied to an inefficient operation

will magnify the inefficiency.

Quote Attributed to Bill Gates

Success in creating AI would be the biggest event in human history.

Unfortunately,

it might also be the last, unless we learn to avoid the risks.

Quote Attributed to Stephen Hawking

For a successful technology,

reality must take precedence over public relations,

for Nature cannot be fooled.

Quote Attributed to Richard Feynman

While artificial intelligence was not a part of my initial thought process, it’s a wonder where pondering plus rabbit hole experiences can take you.

Excellent quotes that are worthy of pondering. I remember corded phones that we were not allowed to answer during dinner. And with no answering machine, we never knew who was calling. Great memories! :-)

Good morning Michael. Your posts are a constant source of things to ponder. The quotes you used are definite cause for more pondering. I appreciate it. I am of an age where "party on" does not float my boat, but "ponder on" certainly does. Enjoy your day.

Good morning, Michael... for some reason when I saw your featured photo of the little boy, my first thought was that it was a photo of you as a child. I, too, remember days before voicemail, answering machines, etc. Heck... I remember the days of mimeograph machines... all that purple ink. And all through college, I took tests in the proverbial "blue books." I do sometimes miss the good old days.

Michael Jacobs I like the quote by Bill Gates although I am not a fan of his. I also like the second quote with the same thought (not a fan). Can't say that I "get" the third quote. I will ponder it further.

Good morning Michael,

As usual your pondering is something to be read and fosters further pondering. I love the quotes especially the one by Stephen Hawking. I remember rotary phones, party lines and absolutely no taking a call at dinner. MLS books, going to a clients house to sign offers and back if any changes, MLS books, fax machines etc. We've come a long way but no technology beats the human interaction Face to Face!

Hi Michael- very good Tuesday ponderings. Oh yes, I remember rotary phones. I recall a print ad that said "Remember how simple life used to be?"

I love gadgets and technology and yet a concern of mine is always that our inventions get ahead of common sense. Man is not perfect therefore what we create will always have some of our imperfections.

Hi Michael you're wandering and pondering down tech efficiency lane reminded me of 2 old tech things I recall.  One was when my folks purchased second home on a lake we were AMAZED that the phone line was a party line.  You never knew who was on if you picked up to make a call.  Kind of reminded me of folks who gossip on SM these days!  My folks quickly brought inn a private line~ guess they didn't want us listening to gossip! The other thing was at our home in town our phones were set up to interrupt any phone call one of us kids might be on from what they called the 'Watts Line Operator'.  It was a business call for my Dad and we knew we had to get off right then and now!  That must have been a head of it's time back in the  60's - but that would have been my Dad's style.

I appreciated all the interesting quotes!  Makes me think......and that's a fun trip~

Anna "Banana" Kruchten - I liked what you said "kind of reminded me of folks who gossip on SM these days!" There is danger in gossip, anyway you look at it! Gossip can kill a friendship and like poison it spreads.

You reminded me of growing up and my mother never allowing us kids to use the rotary phone because we had a party-line. Perhaps she was protecting us???

When I worked in Maine 1987 through 1992, Camp had three of those really, really old phones (one in the Office, one at the Nurses Station, one inside the Directors/Owners Cabin). I had to learn how to ring up the right long, short rings to make a call. As a member of Staff, we always thought the owners knew everything that was going on and there was nothing anyone could get away with. We did have a payphone in one of the buildings for Counelors and Staff to make a public phone call with the Operator, and we still wondered what connections the local Operator had with the owner/Directors.

When I opened my first real estate and insurance office in the summer of 1961, we had no computers, cell phones or printers. And, our city did not have a MLS service. We used one page contracts and carbon paper for copies. There were no home inspections.

Yes, Michael Jacobs No doubt we have come a long way in technology, as I remember using those old rotary phones and answering machines. Watching those old Star Trek movies, I see AI has finally become a reality in many of our lives today.

Jerry Newman - while I was aware of Star Trek, I didn't follow the characters or the story lines.  Now, when it comes to The Jetsons, I think I have more of an expertise.  If one could call the most subtle of details expertise in an animated sort of way.

Good Friday morning, Michael. Have a great day and an outsanding weekend.

We have a cloudy and cool morning in Maryland. Dolores will be going out to pick up the groceries that she ordered online. They will put the bags in her trunk and I wll bring them in when she returns.

Roy Kelley - I haven't tried that method of grocery shopping, but I can see where it seems to be gaining popularity as store workers selecting grocery orders often compete with regular shoppers in the aisles.  The world continues to change.

It is still before dawn as I write this reply to your comment.  The weather forecast for our area is more HOT temps.  I hope your day and weekend are enjoyed.

We are all using AI, whether people recognize that or not not, Michael. Implementing more into my daily routines is a personal choice but prefer to keep it minimal. I still remember the smell of mimeographed paper in elementary school and was in awe of how they reproduced copies. Oh, the smell!

Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can! - intelligence however it is defined "lives" among us.  As for the miracles of reproduction, some of those lessons continue.   And to say they are sensory, is well-founded.

Michael, the quotes are indeed enlightening and I couldn't help but wonder if you might be keeping the door open to AI?

Michael Jacobs - I liked Stephen Hawkins quote the best. Reminded me of what happened to Oppenheimer!

As far as technology goes, nothing is perfect. Neither was playing the children's game of telephone. By the time the whispering in ears went down the line to the last person, the words out loud were completely different than whoever initiated the play in-the-ear telephone message.

Ernestine, the telephone operator on Saturday Night Life made me and everyone laugh at ourselves. Today, gossip on SM is no laughing matter. I think of those who do that are secret bullies.

Patricia Feager, ABR,CRS,GRI,MRP - I kinda doubt any children today would know about or played the game of telephone.  And that's a shame, that low tech lesson was quite valuable.   Hmm. . .
