Where There Is Smoke There Is Fire.

The smoke from forest fires in Canada and the Western USA have/had been so bad last week children have not been let outside for recess due to it being a hazard to their health. This is not something I remember as a child and I am wondering why it is happening today.

The only explanation I have heard is that environmentalists have pushed legislation forbidding the cleaning up the floor of the forests so there is a lot more flammable tinder on the floor of the forest then there ever has been before.  If this is true it's very ironic. Maybe forest specialist Bob Crane can let us know if it it true.

What I do know is that the smoke is costing me money. On days I could turn off the AC at night and open a window the smoke is so bad I don't want it in my bedroom.

Wow, I am sorry to hear this, this is not fun,  they need to correct this.  The smoke must be worse for the environment I would think.

I agree Michael Elliott that this has to be worse for the environment then clearing the forest floor of years of tinder laying on it. The environment is much more hardy then people give it credit for. After all God created it and made sure it would maintain it self. Let's see... God vs man... I'm pretty sure God's plan wins every time.

Sadly, Bob, about 90% of the fires are caused by humans either intentionally or accidentally: discarded cigarettes, unattended or improperly distinguished campfires, burning debris, and other ways. Weather-related fires are much less common.

They can throw all the money they want at global warming, but it's not going to fix human carelessness or intentional acts of evil.

That sounds terrible! We've been lucky so far this year that the smoke has mostly stayed away. And as Carol indicated, many fires are caused by humans. Unfortunately, though, I do think a lot of forests have not been cleared for fire suppression purposes so once a fire does start, it can be very hard to put out.

Right on Kat Palmiotti . The burnt land is a tragedy BUT just one loss of life is worse and a lot of men and women put their lives on the line trying to put these fires out. If the fire is found to be man made the fire starter should be made to account for the lives lost.

Nina Hollander, Broker I believe that is because when we were kids the environmentalists didn't force policies that actually harm the cause they think they are protecting. While environmentalists hate logging those logging companies did take care of the forests by protecting the land. They were not idiots, they knew the value of the forests.

It is amazing that there are that many fires out there today Dorie Dillard Austin TX and it is to bad that the old adage of what goes up must come down applies to smoke. If it would just go up and out in space we would be okay in ND but it goes up, gets caught in the jet stream and dumped in the great plains region. Of course if it went into outer space we may upset some aliens. 😊

Hello Bob.  I remember when in the Lake Tahoe Basin area.  Environmentalists stopped the clearing of brush etc as well.  Until a couple of MAJOR fires swept thru the area at a pace unstoppable.  Cleaning of brush and dead trees now proper forest management.  Go figure.  lol  m
