Fashioning a Dream House

Do you ever take the time to look back at the photos you took on your cell phone and wonder what inspired you to take the picture?

The feature photo for this blog post was taken at the Texas REALTOR® Conference at Gaylord Texas in Grapevine last month in August. I was on my way to purchase a cup of coffee wondering which direction am I going to get to the coffee shop? So, I paused to look around and other thoughts collied with my wishes for coffee:

  • Am I on the right path?
  • Am I like a fish swimming upstream or downstream?
  • Do I need to be refreshed with a cup of coffee?

When I found the center outside of where coffee could be purchased, I found myself on a balcony looked down over the iron railings. Today is Sunday, September 8, 2024. It's funny how a month or a date serves as a reminder of your past. It was one year ago in September 2023 when I took an Architecture Class with Lynn Brandon from Olli/UNT (University of North Texas). In class I studied and looked at examples of different types of houses, American, Folk, Colonial, Romantic (Greek), and Victorian Houses too. Perhaps these thoughts came flooding back to me during my sleep. Yesterday evening I went to an event at an Art Gallery in Grapevine and the first artist I met worked with metal and he went into great detail explaining how he created his work of art. Last night I dreamt about my parents' home. We had an ornate iron fence in front of the garden closest to the house and a matching black iron railing that I touched each time I went up the stairs to the front door. That house I lived in was built in Chicago in the late 1890's.

Looking back at my photos taken in the City of Grapevine, and thinking about what I did yesterday, including the dream I had last night I wondered, is this the reason why Buyers want to make their dreams a reality and could it be the reason why it takes some longer to find it than others?

Outside the Art Gallery, while sitting on a bench, a friend of mine from Real Estate made a comment to an Artist about previous buyers. The buyers always started out saying what they wanted to buy but typically bought something completely different than what they were dreaming about. And the Artist was quick to say, that's how it is when she paints. She never knows were paint lands on canvas and how it turns out. She herself is often surprised.

And so, I pondered...

  • Do people fashion a dream out of a combination of memories?
  • Are dreams snippets of memories?
  • Do people really know what they want because they dreamt it?
  • Can a dream be the solution for something pondered for a long time?
  • Why do people want to make their dream a reality?

I hope you enjoyed my pondering and would love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks, Patricia, for sharing some of your memories.

Last night, Dolores and I looked an an album from a trip to Nepal in 1987 and it brought back many memories. We are having lunch with a niece today. She is engaged to marry a doctor from Nepal and we will be meeting him for the first time.

Roy Kelley - How exciting! I'll bet that trip to Nepal in 1987 will continue to flood your memories. Have a wonderful lunch with your niece today! How great is that, she is getting married to a doctor form Nepal!

Good morning, Patricia... I never remember to take pictures with my cell phone so there's not much on my phone to reflect on. As for buyers ending up buying something very different from what they said they absolutely wanted... I've seen that happen more time than I can count. Some agents say buyers are liars. I say buyers just don't really know what they want until they see it. Happy Sunday!

Nina Hollander, Broker - Looking at potential property to buy is not as easy, nor should it be! People do know what they want when they experience it and that's why it is so important to never buy, sight unseen. Or if a couple is buying, don't let your partner make that decision on their own. I knew someone in Flower Mound who gave the wife liberty to make a decision on a property out of state. The first time the spouse saw the house was on the day of closing. Spouse was grumpy, mad, an not happy with the other half's decision.

Patricia Feager, ABR,CRS,GRI,MRP I've actually "purchased" homes for three clients without their seeing them first-hand. Of course, I had already shopped with those clients and knew what they wanted. Fortunately, all three were very happy with my selections. One couple is still living in the home 20+ years later. My clients always "kid" me about how I seem to know what they will end up buying long before they know.

Hi Patricia,

When looking at my camera roll on my phone, I often wonder why I took that photo.  As for the coffee, I would say "yes!".  For the perfect house, That's a tough one...

Jeffrey Richman - As for the "perfect house," I agree with you. "That's a tought one..."

Taking a random photo is sorta like a freeze moment, and I myself sometimes wonder, what was I thinking.

Hello Patricia - I am not skilled in the photo-taking department.  With an instamatic point-and-shoot kind of camera or with the one on my cell phone.  I would likely have countless captured moments of my shoes, sidewalk cracks and other forms of unexplained blurriness.

To the bigger picture offered by your post, many sorts of reminiscences return to me in various other ways.  And I am grateful whenever they occur.  Unfortunately, they don't always appear "on demand".  Happy Sunday.

Michael Jacobs - interpreting dreams can often be next to impossible. Rarely do I make connections, but it happens. With digital phones it's not hard to capture life in real time. Steady, aim, take a photo. My photos are usually intentional.

Patricia, many times buyers end up purchasing something completely different from what they initially claimed they wanted.  We've seen they start off looking for a large colonial home but ultimately buy a two-bedroom condo. Or they insist on a gated community, only to choose a home on a bustling main road! I should take a photo of the confused look on my face!

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 - Yes! Take a photo of "the confused look on your face!" Once when I was spending a lot of time showing houses to a couple, I realized, she was an urbanite. Her partner was a country bumpkin.

Years later, he confessed to me, they nearly got a divorce because it was the first time they realized how different they were. The good news is, they compromised and they are still a couple.

I'm always amazed when the final decision is vastly different and happy when they come to an agreement.

Good morning Patricia,

I will look at my camera roll and look at the date and most of the time good memories are conjured up but occasionally I'll wonder what was in my mind when taking that shot. Sounds like you had several directions going with your pondering today! Thanks for letting us see some of them!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX - our minds work in mysterious ways! I also know that when I used my camera before we had digital capabilities by phone, I was more focused and determined to get the best shot. Today, it's a lot easier to delete photos that become clutter on my phone.

Thank you, Patricia, for sharing your reflections on fashioning a dream house and the connections between memories and our desires. I truly enjoyed your insights, and they resonate with my own experiences and thoughts on what makes a home meaningful! For me, it’s the special moments, like holidays, birthdays, and even everyday routines, that contribute to the character of a home. These memories form a narrative that makes the space uniquely ours.

Lew Corcoran - the beautiy of people is we are all so different when it comes to wants and needs, especially when the others don't really know what they want when they begin the process of looking at homes.

Buying a home is so much more than price. There is lot to take into consideration.

Patricia what your artist friend stated about her paintings can be said about our lives as well.  We may start out with one thing in mind, but along the way our lives take on a shape of its own.

George Souto - Talking to that professional Artist who travels extensively domestically and internationally was such a unqiue opportunity. There were many things I heard from the Artist that was so similar to what we go through when working with buyers and sellers. The biggest difference is, the Artist is the product. A REALTOR searches for homes to fit the buyer's profile. I learned long ago, never to assume I know exactly what the buyer wants. Mind changing is typical especially when it comes to location.
