I have been typically writing my, "Saturday Soundness" series but as of late, I write them on the fly so this name may not always be fitting. This "soundness" post is featuring our friend, the sun! While this may seem to be a topic that we inherently know is a good thing, in the past 50 years, the opposite is true.
Long before sunscreen was invented, people enjoyed and endured the sunshine that provides us with many health benefits. Our bodies were in fact, designed to soak in the sunshine. The natural sun provides us with the much-needed vitamin D that strengthens our bones, is a natural disinfectant, increases your immune response, and, can help you sleep.
Mentally, the sunshine provides relief from depression, headaches, and malaise. If you are feeling grumpy, get outside and sit in the sun for a few minutes. You might be amazed how this simple act can boost your mood!
Now, of course, precautions need to be considered regarding overexposure and burning. If you are fair-skinned, wear a hat, long sleeves, and only go out in 10-15 minute timeframes. The key is to build up your time spent in the sun. The goal is to get out and enjoy at least 10 minutes of sunshine a day.
Skin cancer is a real thing. Being smart and knowing your skin type is important! Also, depending on the part of the world in which you live will certainly determine your sun exposure needs.
I have major reservations about most sunscreen products. Please read your labels and avoid these ingredients: Oxybenzone, benzene (in any form), actinoxate, and homosalate. These ingredients are toxic and are known to cause many diseases, Autoimmune issues, and can mess with your hormones. Seeking more natural products takes a little research but it is worth your time to find them.
When you slather on loads of chemical-laden sunscreens, your skin which is your largest organ, soaks in these toxins and distributes them to your entire body. Yuck! These chemicals are stored in your fat tissues. Many of these fat stores are located in the breast tissue, around your organs, and in your brain.
The bottom line is this; everything in moderation is a good practice for many things including the sun. Don't be afraid of the sun. You do need a dose of the sun as often as you can.
Happy sunshine! LIV2DAY!
