Sunshine on my Shoulders ~ Health Benefits of the Sun!

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Beam & Branch Realty TREC #547752

I have been typically writing my, "Saturday Soundness" series but as of late, I write them on the fly so this name may not always be fitting. This "soundness" post is featuring our friend, the sun! While this may seem to be a topic that we inherently know is a good thing, in the past 50 years, the opposite is true.

Long before sunscreen was invented, people enjoyed and endured the sunshine that provides us with many health benefits. Our bodies were in fact, designed to soak in the sunshine. The natural sun provides us with the much-needed vitamin D that strengthens our bones, is a natural disinfectant, increases your immune response, and, can help you sleep.

Mentally, the sunshine provides relief from depression, headaches, and malaise. If you are feeling grumpy, get outside and sit in the sun for a few minutes. You might be amazed how this simple act can boost your mood!

Now, of course, precautions need to be considered regarding overexposure and burning. If you are fair-skinned, wear a hat, long sleeves, and only go out in 10-15 minute timeframes. The key is to build up your time spent in the sun. The goal is to get out and enjoy at least 10 minutes of sunshine a day.

Skin cancer is a real thing. Being smart and knowing your skin type is important! Also, depending on the part of the world in which you live will certainly determine your sun exposure needs.

I have major reservations about most sunscreen products. Please read your labels and avoid these ingredients:  Oxybenzone, benzene (in any form), actinoxate, and homosalate. These ingredients are toxic and are known to cause many diseases, Autoimmune issues, and can mess with your hormones. Seeking more natural products takes a little research but it is worth your time to find them.

When you slather on loads of chemical-laden sunscreens, your skin which is your largest organ, soaks in these toxins and distributes them to your entire body. Yuck! These chemicals are stored in your fat tissues. Many of these fat stores are located in the breast tissue, around your organs, and in your brain.

The bottom line is this; everything in moderation is a good practice for many things including the sun. Don't be afraid of the sun. You do need a dose of the sun as often as you can.

Happy sunshine! LIV2DAY!

I find there is nothing better for me than getting outside and enjoying some fresh air, sunshine and nature. Luckily, having a dog who needs multiple walks a day helps me get plenty of breaks.

Yes, Nick. Our pets naturally want to lay in the sun as they instinctively know it is good for them.

I am always looking for a balance of time between sunshine and shade.  For example, in the past, I would swim my laps in the afternoon.  The pool was simply more comfortable then.  However, I noticed my skin began to age significantly.  In more recent years, I swim at dawn.  My skin has restored somewhat.  I think the problem was my hour and a half in the afternoon sun was too long.  I do get sun now, but in shorter amounts while lounging on my patio having breakfast after my swim.

While not a big sun screen user it seems that benzene is in most of the 'screen' products?  Good points on spreading chemicals on your skin.  m

Good morning Paula,

I agree with you "The natural sun provides us with the much-needed vitamin D that strengthens our bones, is a natural disinfectant, increases your immune response, and, can help you sleep." I love being outside and like you also aptly reminded us we need to think about our time in the sun with moderation!

Paula, the sun is good for us; everything is in moderation. There are different types of sunscreens, mineral and chemical. I do not go out in the sun without sunscreen and prefer mineral sunscreen of at least 30

Well put Paula. There is something about the positive psychological effects of the sun, despite the warnings, that are hard to ignore. Hey that is one reason I live in Arizona! Jeff

I love living in a sunny state - AZ. Albeit it's been a bit hot this past month we're in our cool down mode now.  As for being in the sun, for me that's not such a good thing anymore.  I had skin cancer at age 50 and ever since have been very careful to wear 50+ poof sun hats, long sleeves.  But.....I do sneak in a bit of a sunbath now and then in our backyard pool and patio.  Just for short amounts of time, then back on the shady side for me.   Sunny days are happy days and just about every day in PHX is sunny!!

Hi Paula- I'm always out in the sun. I've never liked baking myself when at the beach. I use mineral-based sunscreens and always wear a visor.

Hi Paula,
I've never been a sunbather, but I enjoy being out in the fresh air and sun (when it's not crazy hot). Playing golf usually gives me a good dose of sun. I'll be out there tomorrow.

It frustrates me that the powers that be have convinced people that things are bad when they are actually good.  The sun is a wonderful blessing from God!

Me, ever feeling grumpy, Dr. Paula McDonald  (LOL).

I love the sun yet do cover myself while in it.  I wear long sleeves even in triple-digit temps.

Your advice regarding products is spot on!!!  We are better off reducing the time and getting natural Vitamin D in small doses.

Having recently spent ten days on the islands of Oahu and Maui, I am a big fan of the Sun. But I always have been. Since childhood, I have loved the Sun. As a youth, my family had membership in a local pool club. I spent many days poolside enjoying the Sun.
