Migration Alert…Lights Off!

Because of our interest in birds, Larry and I support the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.  Each year we receive Migration Alerts.  It asks residents to turn off non-essential lighting to help protect the migrating birds.

Migration Alert for the night of 08 Sep 2024

The BirdCast model predicts high-intensity bird migration over your region tonight. Large numbers of birds will be flying! To protect migratory birds in your area, BirdCast and partners recommend turning off all non-essential lighting between 11:00 PM tonight and 6:00 AM tomorrow morning:

  • turn off or dim any non-essential exterior building lighting;
  • close curtains or blinds to reduce the escape of interior lighting; and
  • avoid illuminating lobbies, plants or fountains that may attract birds.

I have no idea how they know when the birds are migrating. It is well above my pay grade.

If you go to the Birdcast site, there are Migration Tools.

You can enter your city and get real time local migration information.

For even more information, you can see a Migration Dashboard

This may be for the birds, but I find it fascinating!!!

Good morning Kathy. So easy to do if we knew! And now we do. Would be interesting to know how they have come to this conclusion? Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin we get to see the bright orange of the Oriole when they're migrating. They really do stand out.

Because of you Kathy I discovered today that birds are starting to migrate this time of year. It’s amazing how nature works!

Hello Kathy - I am continuously learning things that are far above my pay grade, but I was recently reminded of these events.  It seems just like yesterday when I heard about it as spring was about to arrive.  Yes, time flies and so do many sorts of other things too.   ⏰🦅✈️

Michael Jacobs  I hear what you're saying. I was just getting accustomed to 100 degree weather and it staying light longer. Now, I'm going to have to remind myself what I wear when it's cold out. bummer.

This is interesting information to share.

Lighting for security may conflict with bird migrations.

Roy Kelley true. Ours comes on when there is movement so we have adjusted it.

That is an interesting post to which I will follow up on some of your links.  I am curious what the lights do to create an issue for migrating birds, especially me not being aware they traveled at night as well.  m

Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint-Idaho I think it has something to do with disorienting them. The light may attract them and they may also bump into windows. In Delray businesses and residences along the ocean turned their lights off during turtle season. When baby sea turtles hatch, they want to move to the water, often following the light from the moon. If they see light onshore they may head towards that light.

Oh, I thought you were talking about the debate tonight (though I guess you would be talking about illegal migration at that point).

Because of your interest in birds- it's worth mentioning the Audubon Historic District in Washington Heights in Manhattan. John James Audubon's final resting place is in Trinity Cemetery on the Hamilton Heights/Washington Heights border. His estate was located on present day Riverside Drive @156th St- just 1 block from Trinity Cemetery. I actually have a listing at the John James Condominium - the site where his estate once stood.  Also worth noting, a number of years back- we had an art gallery that reached out to many buildings in the neighborhood- ultimately painting bird murals on the sides of a number of buildings in the neighborhood (and in one case- the mural covers the front facade).

Adam Feinberg that is so interesting!!! I'm going to search to see if I can find photos of the murals.

I had no idea about this site Kathy.  So interesting. I will have to take  a look and get the migration happenings in our area.  As you know, we're bird watchers and we look for birds that aren't normally here and wonder where they're headed to next. Now maybe I can find out!

Anna "Banana" Kruchten our backyard has been active and we've seen more hummingbirds than we normally do.

Interesting Kathy.  We normally have a number of hummingbirds that live in our backyard and we still do.  Maybe this is their home base?

Hi Kathy,
I do know birds have annual migration habits but I had no idea there was such a site to show current migration information in my city. There is no migration alert in my area. I was curious why the lights would bother the birds, and this is what I found:
Bright lights attract and disorient nocturnally migrating birds, potentially causing fatal collisions with buildings or exposure to additional daytime hazards.

If that’s the case the large cities would have them all confused but also have them resting when they start again in daylight and. One does see the swarms in daylight

Wow, very interesting. Here is NW AZ, I have witnessed very few migrating birds. Back in NW IN, we often saw Canada geese migrating. The inclusion of the maps was quite fascinating. I would imagine for airlines this information is necessary especially when landing.

Kathy:

This was fascinating! I had no idea a site like this existed.

Our male orioles have all left for Mexico in the last few weeks but we are still seeing a few females that leave later. The males are first to return in the spring.

I always use to enjoy the migrating geese flying overhead back in New England.
