An Uncommon Way to Shoe Horses

An Uncommon Way to Shoe Horses

I noticed what appeared to be a bus shelter while walking with my cousin in Portugal this past week. I was told that it wasn't a bus shelter but was a stand for shoeing horses.

I couldn't appreciate how that would be practical as I, after all, was an expert from seeing all those old cowboy movies.

As I looked closer, there were 2 hooks on one side of the stand, with a matching pair on the other side.

Evidently, a horse would be led in and a sling would go from one side to the other under the house matching each pair of hooks,

The horse was then raised off the ground until there was adequate clearance to get to the hooves with no danger to the animal.

There was a ratchet and stay on the rotator side so that it would lock in place and when the pressure was released after the hooves were re-shod, then the horse would be let down.

It seemed to make sense as with the 4 feet off the ground, the horse would be less likely to hurt itself or the farrier doing the job.

I have been an Activerain blogger since 2008 and as the battery on my laptop died I am posting from a cell phone for the first time.
I am so appreciative of the abilities of those that can do this effortlessly.

Hi Ed,

I've never had to shoe a horse and don't think that I'll ever have to.  Since you've done your research, if the need arises, I may call you!

How very interesting. I am sure the farriers in that area figured out this excellent way to shoe horses a long time ago. Do you know if it is still used regularly?

Hi Ed,
Good job with the cell phone blog post. I've never attempted it and don't plan to. That's an interesting horseshoeing technique.

That horse shoeing stand is very innovative.  I wonder if we have anything even close to it here in the states.

Hi Ed:

Good work on your posting from your phone!

That's certainly something I have never seen before. I grew up with horses beginning in grade 3 and saw many a horse being shod by the farrier, lifting each leg one by one to remove old shoes and attach the new ones. Some horses were more tolerant than others!

Definitely interesting. I have seen horses getting new shoes. The farrier has the horse’s hoof firmly in his grasp - like in the movies.  this is a fascinating way to tackle the job. I am sure though he first time a horse gets hoisted off his feet he is a bit nervous

Interesting!  I haven't been around horses much since I was a LOT younger, so no clue.  But this makes so much sense for the horse and farrier!  Thanks for sharing!

Good for you for posting from your phone.  I haven't tried it yet, so kudos!
