Turn, Turn, Turn

When you live in a four seasons climate it means you need to have many yard tools and maybe even a lot of toys as well.

Fall doesn't require much for itself except a good rake or two, a leaf blower, and maybe a tiller to plow over the years garden bounty. That being said, knowing that winter could happen at any minute, you need to know what to winterize NOW. Things like your home, your car, your camper, your boat, and your mower and other small engines. Each of these things need attention. My least favorite is winterizing the camper.

Even a small camper like ours (pictured above) has a plumbing system. The fresh water holding tank need draining, the two sewage systems need draining. The hot water heater and all the water lines need to be "blown-out" as well. Then there is food and other items that won't fair well with-in the camper. Failing to do any or all these thing could be very costly for the next camping season or if you want to sell the camper in the future.

I didn't realize that talking about winterizing would cost me so many words so I'm going to leave this as my Fall maintenance post and not go through the other 3 seasons at this time.

If you have perticular questions about getting ready for winter in ND please ask in the comments. The last note I will make is that if you have a snow thrower NOW is the time to make sure it is running. If you wait for that first snowfall you will be put on a long list at the repair shop. and may not get it back until the winter is over.

When I read your post, I did hear The Byrds in my head!   Mild winters lately in NJ, I'd love to get a pounding snow storm!  have a great weekend.

I like winter storms too Michael Elliott but I prefer to get them in January or February, not early in the winter.

Hello Bob - while this native Californian lived for a while amidst the snow, I never had any equipment.  Proper upfront preparation is good advice in any season or situation.

Like Michael Elliott, the song started playing in my head as I read your post title today.  Of course, my musical knowledge stopped there - I can rarely remember the names of groups or the correct lyrics.

I thought it was the perfect song to go along with Timmothy's cartoon Michael Jacobs . Once I located it on YouTube I had to play it 3 times.

As you said, there really aren't things to do to get ready for Autumn - it's the Winter we need to prepare for. On our end, that means making sure we have enough chopped firewood (check) and kindling (not yet). It means doing maintenance that we wanted to do in the summer but didn't. It means having enough salt in case we need it for the driveway. Etc. etc. It's amazing that September is half over already. I guess we have to get our butts in gear!

Kat Palmiotti we are hoping to get a lot done this weekend. The camper prep for sure and hopefully I can un-bury the snow thrower out of the shed. 🙂

Good morning, Bob... the minute I read your title the Byrd's song, Turn, Turn, Turn came into my head... and now it won't leave! Your post (once again) reminded me of how happy I am to live where heavy winterization is not something I need to think about.

Nina Hollander, Broker , my Love. I had to play it 3 times so that I had heard enough so it would not be stuck in my head. I would move to Charlotte in a heart beat if I could.

Good morning Bob. I now live in a townhome eliminating much attention to winterization. And, at my age, the toys are gone. So, if I keep my car in the garage all I need to do is add some fluid to my cars window washer tank. I have already done so. Enjoy your day.

Sounds like you are set Wayne Martin . I'm not quite ready to give up my house yet but the temptation is getting stronger and stronger.

Hello Bob and I am sure snow in the high country is coming soon here but I am still in summer here with a couple more days in the 90's I am sure.

Will Hamm I would call our weather "Confused Mother Nature" as no one knows what we are going to have from day to day or even AM to PM in the same day. It's kind of fun.
