September 11, 2001: Let Us Never Forget Those Who Sacrificed...

Let Us Honor & Remember Them

"September 11 is one of our worst days, but it brought out the best in us. It unified us as a country and showed our charitable instincts and reminded us of what we stood for and stand for."

Senator Lamar Alexander

23 years have passed since that horrific day on September 11th, 2001. Even after 23 years it always stuns me that I can still remember that day as if it was yesterday and not more than two decades ago. September 11th, 2001 is a day that fundamentally changed all of our lives. Even though on 9/11 we knew our lives had changed, most likely forever, on that day we did not yet comprehend how much they would change. And many of those changes became the "new normal" for us. 9/11 is the Pearl Harbor of our generation.

"September 11th impressed upon us that life is a precious gift... and I think we all have a duty to devote at least a small portion of our daily lives to ensuring that neither America nor the the world ever forgets September 11th."

Senator Bill Frist

Although it's been 23 years, when this day comes around, I find myself more emotional today and I was then... maybe because some of the shock of that day has worn off... so all that's left is emotion.

The memories of one of the darkest days in American history 23 years later remain crystal clear in my mind's eye. It still feels like yesterday that we were witnessing the events of September 11, 2001 unfold.  I still remember the first shock of seeing those plans hit the Towers. I still remember the fear that came with not being able to reach friends and family by phone (especially those who worked in or near the Twin Towers). I still remember getting through the day without a lot of emotion -- just shock -- and suddenly in the early evening tears began flowing down my face. Here we are, 23 years later, marking another anniversary of that tragic day. It feels like yesterday. And I think it will always feel like yesterday to me. And I doubt I will be less emotional on this day in the years to come.

One day 9/11 will become "ancient" history to future generations (already 20+% of Americans have no memory of that day). But so long as those of us who lived through that day are around, WE MUST NEVER FORGET THOSE WHO SACRIFICED!   I, for one, know I could never forget! And today, 23 years later, I am still tearful when I think of that day.

Please Pause For A Moment Today:

Honor And Remember The Victims And The Courage Of The First Responders

"Time is passing. Yet for the United States of America, there will be no forgetting September the 11th. We will remember every rescuer who died in honor. We will remember every family that lives in grief. We will remember the fire and ash, the last phone calls, the funerals of the children."

President George W. Bush

To the many who lost a loved one that day, my heart and prayers go out to you. I know you suffered losses that can never be replaced. Today, on the 23rd anniversary of 9/11, let's take a moment to remember all the heroes of that day -- both those who perished and those who survived. Let's make sure these deaths were not in vain.

"9/11 - a day to remember that extraordinary heroes are often disguised as ordinary people and that spirit and soul are unbreakable."

Stacey Alcorn

As we honor the victims and the courage of the first responders, today is also a good day to take a moment today to reflect on the things that are most important in our lives and to remember that through tragedy we continue to have the opportunity to rise even stronger.

“September 11, 2001, revealed heroism in ordinary people who might have gone through their lives never called upon to demonstrate the extent of their courage.”

Geraldine Brooks

LET US NEVER FORGET...

LET US ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT THE PRICE OF FREEDOM IS ETERNAL VIGILANCE...

LET US ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT FREEDOM IS NOT FREE!

May God Bless Those Who Died And Their Families.

May God Bless America On This Anniversary And Every Day To Come!

Oh my gosh, I'm with you on the way this day affects me. I don't know why, but I had decided not to work in my NYC office that day, but to work in Westchester instead. My NYC team had a front window seat as they could see the towers, and when one of them contacted me to tell me they just saw a plane hit the towers, we commiserated about what a horrible accident that was. When he contacted me to tell me the second one hit, I suggested they all go home, that this was not an accident. They had already stopped all public transportation so they had to walk wherever they were going. I went to my kids school to pick them up and we went home to watch the rest of the disaster on TV as it unfolded. Since we had a lot of commuters in my town, we did lose people that day and in subsequent days. Such a sad sad time.

Kat Palmiotti good morning, Kat... I've heard versions of your story more times than I can count. It was just a horrible day. Sadly, memories are fading of that day.

Kat Palmiotti - you must have been shaken to the core. I know I was but I was far enough away in Texas but the Towers in relations to your office was too close for comfort. When I watched the news, I was shocked to see Carol Marine walking away from the Towers with ash covering her hair and the rest of her body. I knew Carol Marine because she was a Chicago Journalist and the Guest Speaker at my College Graduation! Because you lived in NY, feelings and images are vastly different from others far removed,  but still shocking.

Kat, cannot even think about actually seeing it.  It was bad enough in Colorado we watched on TV completely horrified.

Good morning Nina. It was a day I will never forget, from the first phone call asking if I knew to spending most of the day in a conference room watching TV. It was a day I will never forget. It was not a good day.

Wayne Martin that may be the understatement of the century... that it was not a good day. As you might imagine, with friends who worked in the World Trade Center area and my brother who was a teacher just blocks away in Chinatown... I spent all day trying to make sure people were okay.

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 hi Sheila... I suspect that people who lived through Pearl Harbor could also never forget. We lived through 9/11... but so many people today weren't even born then. One of my clients who is 38 years old told me the other day, she was in middle school that day and that she and her classmates really did not understand fully what happened and why.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty hi Jeff... in my own case, I can relate to the Holocaust even if I was born shortly after WWII ended. I knew a number of people in NY City who had been in the camps and seeing those numbers tattooed on their arms always had a chilling effect on me.

I remember the day very vividly as well Nina Hollander, Broker . When I think about it I still tingle with the horror of what the victims must have thought when they looked out their office windows and saw a plane about to smash into their office.

I wonder if those who are anti-Israel realize it was people exactly like Hezbollah who cold bloodily murdered Americans on American soil? Deliberately, unprovoked and with glee murdered women, children.

I totally get it that you feel the emotions of that day. I remember visiting the memorial a few years ago and was in tears standing there, even now my eyes are tearing up thinking about those emotions from that visit. So much loss, and so much bravery in the midst of so much horror.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 hi Nick...what you described visiting the memorial is how I respond every time I'm at the Viet Nam Memorial in Washington DC. That was the war of my generation and I can't help but cry when I see that wall with all the name of the lost.

Nina Hollander, Broker - Those of us who remember have memories of when, where, and what we were doing when the news broke out. That was the day the world stopped. I just walked into work when the first Tower was hit. Others in my office told me and I went to our Fittness Center where I knew there was a television. I just walked into the center when I saw the second tower get hit. It was horrible. The engery in that room was stronger than ever and we all watched in disbelief.

I saw Carol Marine, Chicago Journalist on T.V. walking out of the building covered in ash. I talked to my daughter who had moments before the attack talked to her best friend who was about to get into the subway to go to work at the Towers. We didn't know what happened to her for a few days. For most of that day, the trains stopped in the subway and nobody could get out. It was the eeriest day in history for many of us.

Patricia Feager, ABR,CRS,GRI,MRP I was at the office for a sales meeting when the news came through. Everyone scattered to go home. And what I remember to this day is how Charlotte streets suddenly emptied out and how quiet everything was.

Patricia Feager, ABR,CRS,GRI,MRP Hi Patricia... to call the day eerie is absolutely appropriate. I had friends who worked in adjacent buildings. My brother was a teacher in a public school just blocks away. It was impossible to track anyone down for what seemed like days.

Nina Hollander, Broker - I had my Advanced Finance Class the evening of 9/11. The Professor started class and within a few minutes, he stopped. He was choked up as he tried to tell us, I can't teach. My best friend has an office at the top of the first Tower. Class was dismissed and I hung around with students in the parking lot until very late at night. We spoke to each other and shared our fears, hopes, and prayers.

Endre Barath, Jr. good morning, Endre... part of the problem is that more than 20% of Americans today were not even alive on 9-11 and 30% of Americans today were too young to really remember and understand it. It's not excuse... those of us who do remember need to do a better job of teaching.
