Perspective
They say that time heals all wounds. I don’t know about healing them, but over time our hurt and pain are pushed to the back. The memories and how we felt are still there.
That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons that history has to teach.
Aldous Huxley
TIME does, however, offer us a different perspective of the events. And, if we’re lucky and wise, we learn from what happened.
It’s been 23 years. 9/11 still seems fresh to me. I remember the hours spent watching the news and how my spirit was lifted, even if for a short time, when I saw how this nation came together.
First responders were thanked and respected. Our wonderful flag flew in our yards and on our cars. Many of us wore Flag lapel pins.
We wanted to cancel those who hurt us, not those who didn’t fit a new agenda.
We showed kindness to each other rather than calling each other names.
And now, it’s 2024, 23 years later. Have we forgotten? Have we relegated 9/11 to a changed history?
One cannot and must not try to erase the
past merely because it
does not fit the present.
Golda Meir
Moving forward doesn’t mean moving on or forgetting but moving through and taking with us what we’ve learned.
Our differences can strengthen us just as much as the ideas and goals we have in common.
My hope is that as we mark the 23rd anniversary of 9/11 we can put aside our differences…stop the name-calling…throw out the negativity and consider how great and powerful we are when we come together.
A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within.
