Double Standards

I'm sure we ALL have been victims of double standards in business and in life in general. It's not a fun position to be in. We seem to see it often in politics as well but I'm NOT going there.

The first Real Estate Broker I worked under had a huge blind spot when it came to double standards. He didn't put up with cheating and theft of in house customers unless you were the top/higher producing agent in a dispute with another agent. He who produces the most is right... even if they are wrong. This is why I left my first broker. My second broker just had his favorites, period. As they say, the third time is the charm.

My third Broker, Mr. Earl Allen, was a straight shooter. He was one of the most misunderstood and disliked Brokers in the MLS because he always said what he thought and as far as I know he never backed down. He set me up to succeed as a Broker on my own by giving me my own office space in a separate building from his own (Great location in the front of a movie theater building) and even under a separate name than his Brokerage. Earl owned several Brokerage names even though those names had not been used. Earl taught me that a Broker can be fair/just with all agents and that people appreciate you being you.

Regretfully Earl passed on before I earned my Brokers license so I went to another Broker who, like Earl, was a wonderful example to learn from. Gary Wydahl also encouraged me to get my Brokers license ASAP. Regretfully came down with pneumonia and also died prior to my receiving my Brokers license BUT the NDREC let me stay in Gary's place as I completed my Brokers requirements.

People notice when you/we use double standards. The results never put us in a good light. When we accept or grant a "favor" to someone will someone else see us living a double standard? Think about it.

Great post!   Speaking of double standards,  can you imagine in Trump had declared, "I will cure cancer when elected??"   Yes, that was a promise of our current president.

The double standers problem may help account for so many new agents dropping out their 1st year Bo Zivak .

Amazing how short sited some brokers are Lise Howe . They would have much larger and happier teams if they treated everyone fairly.

Good morning, Bob... one of the reasons I moved over to RE/MAX many years ago was because there was no double standard... I watched the broker owner fire a top producing agent who was less than ethical. Sadly, I've seen more brokerages who will tolerate things from a top producer so as not to lose their production.

My heart would have jumped for joy had my first Broker acted ethically. He regularly looked the other way as the top two agents poached new agents clients.

My first broker definitely had two standards for top producers and new agents. It was quite discouraging at times. I left and made a second poor decision regarding a broker. I am not a fan of double standards!

Good morning Bob. Double standards have become the norm as opposed to the exception. If I say more I will rant forever. So no more for now. Enjoy your day.

Hello Bob - sometimes seeing standards, single and in multiple other ways, may require additional investigation.  Reactions of many kinds are not always observable at initial glance.  First impressions matter.  And knee-jerk reactions of many sorts are a part of life.  It's simply complicated.  Once again.

"It's simply complicated." I have to ponder that one Michael Jacobs 😁

Bob "RealMan" Timm - I use "simply complicated" a lot.  Because it's true and because it prompts thinking.  Your reply tells me it's effective.  Well, maybe. . .    Happy Tuesday.

I'm working at my 2nd brokerage. My first broker closed it's doors during the pandemic as he was commuting from Jerusalem to NY prior to the pandemic- and travel became impossible for awhile. But- I am still with the same sales manager for the entire 8 1/2 years I have been in the business. I was very cautious who I wanted to learn from when I started in the business- since I was starting out with a long prior corporate career and I chose well.

Bob "RealMan" Timm I worked on Wall Street for 16+ years - initially in a financial capacity working on trading desks for a wide swath of trading products- the most exotic being the role I worked in Precious Metals Structured Derivatives and Special Business. Later I went on to create training for some of these same departments I worked in previously. I later created the Learning and Professional Development infrastructure for a couple of firms. It was fun for a long time- but budgets kept getting obliterated and I had enough of the constant bureaucracy.

Adam Feinberg it sounds like you chose well indeed, congratulations! May I ask what was your corporate position?
